Obituary of Helen Ernestine "Baby" Shomaker ValoisBorn: June 10,1923 Died: January 2, 2025Helen Ernestine "Baby" Shomaker Valois died peacefully after a brief illness surrounded by her loving family. She was a daughter born to Roby Allen Shomaker and Sarah Fina Reece Shomaker. "Baby" as she was affectionately known by almost everyone was born in Banner Elk, N.C. (Balm Community) on June 10,1923. She was the youngest and last surviving of five (5) daughters born to Roby and Fina Shomaker.Left to cherish her memory are her daughter Sara Twiggs and husband Fred llardi of North Augusta, SC; daughter-In-Law, Karen Williams, grandchildren Sarah Ann PawlowskI, John Pawlowski, J. R. Williams (Jennifer) and Sammy Twiggs (Shay); six great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild."Baby" was preceded in death by her parents Roby and Sarah Fina Shomaker, sisters Eudine Shomaker Duncan, Virginia Lois Shomaker Duncan, Louise Shomaker Bare Young, and Victoria "Vicki" Shomaker McCullough; sons Jon R. Williams and Paul Farthing, Jr. and other extended family members.Helen "Baby" grew up in
Newland, NC where she attended public primary school and graduated from Newland High School. After high school Baby spent her working life in South Carolina and Georgia. She was an active volunteer, through church and civic organizations. In 1968 "Baby" was honored by the North Augusta Chamber of Commerce on behalf of her church and community work.Later she was given the South Carolina Service Award for her outstanding volunteer work with the South Carolina Heart Association. Additionally, she was listed a Personality of the South and America's Leaders. Through her generosity. aided in construction of Sea Island Chapel at Hilton Head, SC. She also was pleased to help establish Crooked Stick Wilderness Retreat as an outreach of First Baptist Church of Newland. This Retreat is dedicated to serve underprivileged boys.Her love of competition led her to become a Life Master Certified Bridge player. She was a duplicate Bridge Player well into her 90's. She was awarded a Life Masters Certificate in Bridge.In recent years "Baby" has resided in Brandon Wilde, Evans, GA to be close to her many friends and loving family.Friends and family will gather at Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, 1161 Balm Hwy., Banner Elk, N.C. on Saturday, February 1, 2025 at 10:00 am. Service will begin at 11:00 am. Interment will follow the church service In the Mt. Calvary Church Cemetery.Memorials may be made to
