Helen B. Whitaker

Helen B. Whitaker, 94, of Avon, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 4, 2025, after a brief illness. Born on December 20, 1930, in New Britain, CT, she was the daughter of the late Alexander and Mary (Coolac) Bellomizi. Following her marriage to the late Richard "Dick" Whitaker, Helen made her home in Windsor Locks, later residing in Avon. While in Windsor Locks, she was active in the Ladies' Auxiliary of the Windsor Locks Fire Department. As an adult, Helen discovered her passion for art. What began with oil painting grew into a lifelong dedication to watercolor. An award-winning artist, she was a member of local art associations in Windsor Locks and Avon. Helen was a frequent exhibitor at craft fairs and was honored with a membership to the Connecticut Watercolor Society. Helen enjoyed playing cards and cherished the friendships she made during her years at the senior centers in Windsor Locks and Avon. Helen also enjoyed cheering on the UConn Women's Basketball Team. She is survived by her daughter, Deborah Sullivan of Granby; her son Matthew Whitaker and his wife, Cheryl, of Avon; six grandchildren, Stacey (James) Griffith, Amy (Matthew) Somberg, Rachel (Ryan) Johnston, Heather (Perry) Siegel, Jamie (Jason) Sindler, and Christopher Evans; and ten great-grandchildren: Ariana, David, Ella, Eli, Cooper, Morgan, Noah, Giana, Ava, and Millie. Helen was predeceased by her children, Marilyn Evans and James Whitaker; her grandsons, Peter Sullivan Jr. and William J. Evans III; In accordance with her wishes, there will be no calling hours. A graveside service will be held privately at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Connecticut Children's Hospital.
