Obituary published on Legacy.com by West & Dunn Funeral Home - Erwin on Mar. 12, 2026.
A lady with an infectious smile and a hug that warmed you to your soul. Her phone was always busy, her door was always open, and her biscuits were always fresh. Helen Louise Williams (Vaughn), age 91, of
Coats, NC, passed away unexpectedly surrounded by family on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
She was born in
Coats, NC on November 11, 1934 to the late Herman and Dollie Stone. She grew up working on the farm, where she learned to cook for her family. A trait that she carried on into her life with her own family, becoming everyone's favorite in the kitchen. She loved being the oldest to her two sisters, Joyce and Ann, and little brother, Dick. She graduated from Coats High School and continued on to become a nurse and home health provider. Her greatest passion was caring for others, as she always saw the best in people.
Helen met her husband Bobby in high school, and they married shortly after graduation. He joined the Air Force and she was along for the ride as a military wife. Helen and Bobby quickly started a family and soon enough, they were towing five little ones along with them around the world. She is survived by three sons, Graig, Ricky, and Mark Williams, and a daughter, Sherri Allen. She was preceded in death by her oldest son, Darrell Williams.
Following the passing of her husband Bobby, Helen was blessed to find love again with her second husband, Billy Vaughn. They spent more than two decades together in love before his passing in 2018. She was preceded in death by two step-sons and a daughter. Her youngest step-daughter, Becky Johnson, still carries both of their love.
Helen not only was surrounded by the love of her children, she was also the light of her grandchildren's life. She was the nanny and grandma to 14 grandchildren: Shannon, Brandon, Michael, April, Megan, Eric, Chrissy, Jaselyn, Savak, Amber, Jordan, Trevor, Connor, and Kendall. She was also the great-grandmother to 24 children, and the great-great-grandmother to 7.
Helen followed quickly in death behind her sister, Joyce Godwin. She leaves behind her younger sister, Ann, and her brother Dick, to continue on the love that she so easily gave to her family and community.
Helen Louise will be remembered for her kind spirit, her warm heart, and her unwavering love for her family. Her family was blessed with the sweetest lady on the planet and we are so grateful for the many years that we spent together. She'll forever live in our hearts.
