Mrs. Henrietta Harrell Johnson, age 80, of Thomaston, died Thursday, April 20, 2023, at Providence Health Care. Memorial services for Mrs. Johnson will be held Monday, April 24, at 2:00 PM, in the chapel of Fletcher-Day Funeral Home with Rev. Andy Cunningham officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 1:00 PM until the service hour.
Henrietta was born in Thomaston on June 19, 1942, to the late Henry Horace Harrell, Sr. and the late Louise Mitchell Harrell. She was a 1960 graduate of R. E. Lee Institute, and she attended Georgia College in Milledgeville before marrying Curt Johnson in 1961. Henrietta had a special bond with her classmates that lasted a lifetime. She always enjoyed getting together with the "girls of the 60"s" and the "bridge gals". She was known to put in a tape of 60's music and dance all by herself while she cooked. She never forgot how. Henrietta had lost several close friends and classmates in recent years, and she mourned each one - always pulling up a sweet memory of them. Her loyalties were not casual. As a devoted mom, she was so proud of Julie and Jeff. She stood by them all their lives through all the ups and downs and was so happy to have five grandchildren. For thirty years Henrietta worked as the administrative assistant for the First United Methodist Church in Thomaston. She was often referred to as "the face of the church", the voice behind the phone, and the go-to person to solve problems. For years she was responsible for managing church mission funds helping those in need pay their power bills, buy groceries for their families, and pay rent. She "adopted" many of them, giving them rides to church, taking them to run errands and sharing what she could of her own to make their lives a little easier. She was devoted to her church and her God. Henrietta was quiet in her worship sharing a relationship with God that was sweet and special. She was a real angel on earth, and those fortunate enough to be loved by her will have their own precious memories to cherish. For the past few years, Henrietta has resided at West Village Retirement Community. She was well taken care of by the staff there who helped her deal daily with the dementia that claimed her mind. Her family will always be grateful for the compassionate care and encouragement that she received.
In addition to her parents, Henrietta was preceded in death by her husband, Curt Johnson, her daughter, Julie Johnson, and her half-sister, Anne Harrell. She is survived by her son, Jeff C. Johnson of Thomaston; her brother and sister-in-law, Henry and Susan Harrell of Fernandina Beach, Fl; five grandchildren: Kenzie Johnson, Jacob Johnson, and Lucas Johnson, all of Thomaston, and Kaley and Dixie Johnson, both of Florida; and a great granddaughter, Alexandria Johnson of Florida.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the House of Care, First Baptist Church of Thomaston, 208 South Church Street, Thomaston, GA 30286.
Henrietta's life on earth can be described by the following quote by Flavia Weedn. "Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while and leave footprints on our hearts and we are never, ever the same."
