Dr. Henry William Brevard, II, a native of
Camden, South Carolina, was a man whose life was defined by service, leadership, faith, and an unwavering commitment to education, community, and family. Affectionately known as "Bubba" by his family and close friends, he was the son of the late Henry W. Brevard and Belle Wood Brevard. He received his early education in Camden and graduated from Mather Academy in 1955.
A proud and devoted Loyal Son, Dr. Brevard matriculated at South Carolina State University from 1955 to 1960, where he distinguished himself as an exceptional student–athlete. He starred and lettered in football, track, and basketball. In football, he played multiple positions on both sides of the ball, while also excelling in track, finishing first in numerous meets. In recognition of his outstanding athletic achievements, he was inducted into the South Carolina State University Athletic Hall of Fame for football and track in 2000. He was later honored as one of the Top 100 South Carolina State University Athletes during the University's Centennial Celebration in 2007.
Dr. Brevard made history as the first South Carolina State University alumnus to earn three degrees from the institution, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in Health and Physical Education with a minor in Biology in 1960, a Master of Science degree in Education and Biology in 1969, and a Doctorate in Educational Administration in 1986. He later served six years on the University's Board of Trustees, becoming the first graduate of the University to be elected Chairman of the Board.
A lifelong champion of education and student success, Dr. Brevard devoted more than 55 years to the Berkeley County School District. During his distinguished career, he served as a dedicated teacher, coach, and athletic director at Central High School in Cross, principal of Sandridge Elementary School, Associate Superintendent for Instruction, Director of Adult Education, and Assistant Superintendent for Planning and Development. After retiring in 1994, he continued his service as an Expulsion Hearing Officer until 2015.
Dr. Brevard was a respected and influential leader whose impact extended far beyond the classroom and into the broader community. Demonstrating a lifelong commitment to public service, he served as a member of the Moncks Corner Town Council in 1985 . His leadership and insight were also shared through service on numerous boards and organizations, including the Community Education Advisory Board, Berkeley County Vocational Advisory Board, Palmetto Low Country Health Association, and the Board of Directors of First National Bank.
In recognition of his dedication and contributions to education and community advancement, he received numerous honors, including Adult Education Director of the Year (1977), the South Carolina Department of Education Award for Community Service (1979), the Service Award for Program Development (1981), and the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Higher Education Distinguished Alumnus of the Year Award (1990).
Family and legacy were central to Dr. Brevard's life. On June 10, 1961, he was united in Holy Matrimony to Mildred Gilmore. Their intimate wedding took place in the Church of the Incarnation-an Episcopal church in her hometown of Gaffney, South Carolina. While students at South Carolina State College, they both joined the Episcopal Church, and together they made history as the only Black couple to wed in that previously all white congregation. Their loving marriage endured for 47 years, until Mildred's passing in 2008. To their union were born two children: the late Darryl W. Brevard and Nicole Brevard Hines.
ineville, South Carolina. He pledged Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. in 1960 through the Alpha Lambda Chapter and later became a charter member of the Moncks Corner Alumni Chapter. As a Life Member of Kappa Alpha Psi, he exemplified the fraternity's fundamental purpose of achievement in every field of human endeavor. He embraced its guiding principles of service, leadership, and honorable conduct throughout his life. This same spirit of brotherhood and commitment to uplifting others was reflected in his involvement in additional civic and fraternal organizations. His dedication to service extended to the Briner Lodge #365, Holly Hill, SC of District #2 of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of SC, where he was a Life Member, as well as to the Shriners. He was also a Life Member of the South Carolina State University National Alumni Association, an active member of the Berkeley County Alumni Chapter, and a Board Member of the S.T.A.T.E. Club.
Dr. Brevard was preceded in death by his sister, Henrietta B. Mitchell, and his brothers-in-law, Arnold C. Mitchell, Sr., William Gilmore, II, and Maurice Gilmore.
Dr. Brevard leaves to cherish his memory: his loving and devoted daughter and son-in-law, Dr. Nicole Brevard-Hines (Edison); his respected and caring daughter-in-law, Dr. Veronica Richmond Brevard; his cherished and accomplished granddaughters, VaShannon Brevard and Hadyn Hines; his adored adopted granddaughter, Amethyst Ganaway; his beloved brother-in-law, Singleton Gilmore; and his dear sisters-in-law, Shirley Gilmore Tate, Martha Gilmore, and Tina Gilmore.
He will be lovingly remembered by a host of nieces and nephews, with special appreciation to Dr. Angela Stephens, Usha Gilmore, William Gilmore, III, and Myron K. Terry for their devoted care and support; along with Billy Davidson, Arnold C. Mitchell, Jr., Tyronne Gilmore, Le'Jerik Cannon, Michael Tate, Kyle Tate, Bryan Tate, and Sinclair Cannon. He also leaves grand-nephews Chance Stephens and Austin Stephens; two bonus daughters and a bonus son, Jennifer DuBose, Sandra Mack, and Leroy "Buttons" Spann; along with a host of extended family members, former students, colleagues, friends, and caregivers.
The family also expresses special appreciation for his devoted caregivers, Zaye Johnson, Dannie Henderson, Tanisha Davis, Tameka Gadson, and Elaine Johnson, whose care and compassion meant so much to him in his later years.
Dr. Henry William Brevard's life was marked by excellence, service, and an enduring dedication to uplifting others. His legacy will continue to live on through the lives he touched, the institutions he strengthened, and the family he cherished.
