Henry Walton Mixon, III, age 85, passed away on August 7, 2025. He was born on March 13, 1940 in Henderson, North Carolina to his parents, Anne Simkins Mixon (deceased) and Henry Walton Mixon, Jr. (deceased). He was raised in Goldsboro, North Carolina and graduated from Goldsboro High School in 1958. He has one sibling, Betty Mixon Daughtry, age 89, who is alive and well in North Carolina. Henry attended the University of North Carolina and graduated from Gilford College in 1965. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1967 and went through Officer Training School at Laughlin Air Force Base in Del Rio, Texas. From there he was sent to Japan and, upon returning to the United States, he was stationed in Satellite Beach and then Homestead, both in Florida. Henry was discharged, at the rank of Captain and began his career with the United States Defense Investigative Service in the Homestead area and was transferred to Tallahassee, Florida in 1975 where he completed and retired from his federal career in 1993. Being young and willing, Henry began a career with the State of Florida Office of Professional Practices within the Florida Department of Education as an investigator. While he enjoyed his investigative work, in 2005 he received a "higher" calling and began working as a Chaplain with the Florida Department of Corrections at Wakulla Correctional Institution. Henry would often remark that being a chaplain was the profession he cherished and was most proud of. He transferred to Apalachee Correctional Institution as a Chaplain and later physically relocated to Sneads, Florida in 2007. Upon his retirement from the Department of Corrections, Henry continued as a volunteer chaplain until he was no longer able to physically do so. Even then, he continued with what he called his "mailbox" ministry. Sneads remained his home until his departure from this life.
Henry was married to his soulmate Rhonda (McDaniel) Mixon in October 1990. He was father to Todd (Alma), Kimberly (Todd), David (Michele), Chris, and Mandy (Derek). He also had nine grandchildren, (Christopher, Joshua, Devin, Casey, David, Gabriela, Samuel, Matthew, and Ryan), and four great grandchildren (Daisy, Payten, Haley, and Dani Reese), three nieces (Kay, Peggy, and Carol), great nieces and nephew (Elizabeth, Darden, and Helen Anne). Upon marrying Rhonda, he also became uncle to nephews Kyle, Matthew, and Joey, and was especially close to Matthew who provided care for him during his last few months.
Henry enjoyed having cats and dogs around him and he made certain that each animal had its own very special name. Because of his love for animals, he wanted people to most definitely send contributions to Partners for Pets in Marianna in lieu of flowers. (Partners for Pets, 4011 Maintenance Dr, Marianna, FL, United States, Florida; www.partnersforpetsmarianna.com). Henry also enjoyed "clowning" and for many years used his talents for charity in this role. He loved parades and especially loved participating in the Springtime Tallahassee Parade in his clown attire.
Although Henry had been unable to attend services for quite some time, he was a contributor and supporter of Sneads Pentecostal Holiness Church. Henry was a faithful "assistant" to the Adult Sunday School Class teacher, who happened to be his wife, Rhonda.
A Celebration of Life service for Henry will be held at McAlpin Funeral Home, 8261 Highway 90 in Sneads, Florida on Monday, August 11 at 4:00 PM, CST. You may reach them at 850-593-9900 for additional information. Henry's desire was to be cremated. A private committal service will be held at a later date.
