Henry "Chuck" Whynot Jr.

Henry "Chuck" Whynot Jr 73, died July 31, 2025 at the Maine Veterans Home is Scarborough after a courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and heart failure . He had been a resident there for the past two years. Chuck was born on March 3, 1952 in Portland, Maine, the son of the late Henry Whynot Sr and Patricia Donahue Whynot. He attended Catholic elementary schools, Cheverus High School, and graduated from Portland High School in 1970. Following graduation , Chuck proudly joined the Marine Corps and served four years during the Vietnam War. He was a dedicated and proud Marine. On February 14, 1976 Chuck married Pamela Trafton in Bath, Maine . Together they shared 49 and a half years of marriage and raised two sons Jeremy and Justin. Chuck was a devoted father and an active leader in his sons lives, serving as Cub Scout Leader for Pack 51 and Scoutmaster for Troop 802. Chuck spent 30 years working in auto body repair for Lake Region Imports in Westbrook . He was a hard worker with a strong sense of service, which extended far beyond his professional life. He was a proud member of the American Legion Post 148 , the VFW #10643, and the Marine Corp League, Southern Detachment. He served as Service Officer for the Legion and the VFW and was honored as Service officer of the year three times at the Legion State Convention. He was the founder of the Veteran Coffee Social, held every Wednesday at the Windham Veteran Center. He dedicated himself to collecting food and hygiene items for homeless veterans, delivering supplies weekly to the Portland Vet Center to help fill their shelves. Chuck was a member of the Windham Honor Guard. Chuck also participated in the first trained group of the Vet to Vet program through the Southern Maine Agency of Aging, visiting fellow veterans regularly so they would never feel alone as they faced old age, ill health, or isolation. Chuck lived by the creed "Leave No Man Behind" and truly embodied it. Chuck also donated blood every 56 days until his health prevented it. Above all, Chuck was a family man. He cherished time spent making memories with loved ones at the family camp in Bancroft where he enjoyed hunting, snowmobiling, and riding ATV's with his family and many life- long friends. He took pride in cutting firewood and tackling ongoing camp projects – always happy to lend a hand. In addition to his parents, Chuck was predeceased by his beloved son Jeremy and brother Bill Afthim. He is survived by his loving wife Pam, his son Justin and wife Jennifer of Windham, and three grandchildren Grace, Jeremy, and Elijah also of Windham. He also leaves behind two great grandchildren Ceasar and Mia of Windham, his sister Jeanne and husband Trevor of Yarmouth, brother Jeff and wife Jill of California, and sister Rebecca and husband Bill of California, and many nieces, nephews, cousins, in laws, and lifelong friends. The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff of Unit B at the Maine Veterans Home in Scarborough, and to all who showed love, care, and support to Chuck and his family. You are truly God's gift to Veterans and their families. A Celebration Of Life will be held at the Windham Veterans Center, 35 Veterans Memorial Drive, Windham on August 15, 2025 from 2:00-5:00.
