Herbert “Herb” Kristian Highum, 95, of Rushford died Sunday, March 24, 2024, at his home in Rushford. Herb was born October 2, 1928, in Rushford to George A. and Gertie (Vaagen) Highum. Herb and Ruby Tweten were married on October 4, 1952, and made their home on the Highum family farm in Arendahl Township. Herb and Ruby farmed for many years before retiring to their home in Rushford.
He was very active in the Rushford community and surrounding area. He was a member of, the Masonic Lodge, serving five times as Worshipful Master and three years as district representative; A member of the Order of the Eastern Star; Fillmore County Extension Commissioner for 27 years and chairman for nine years; R.A.S.A.; Fillmore County Young Republicans; Rushford Lutheran Church Council and Church President; local Tri-State Breeders Commissioner; Sang with the Notebenders Quartet, and the Winona Barbershop Chorus for many years; Rushford Area Historical Society; Fillmore County Historical Center in Fountain; Hart Farm Service Board Member; Rushford City Council during the flood of 2007; worked 37 years as a funeral assistant for Hoff Funeral Service; sang for 450 funerals and was a member of Rushford Lutheran Church choir for 80 years; Fillmore County Farm Bureau Board; Winona Health Board; Member of Houston County Historical Society; Grand Marshall of the Rushford Days parade in 2013; Board of Directors for Maple Leaf Services; Rushford Lutheran Cemetery Board; served on the 24 person Design Team, designing the new R-P School; and served on the Fillmore County Thrivent Board.
Herb is survived by his wife, Ruby, three children; Susan (Michael) Anderson of Dodge Center; Kenneth (Toni) Highum and Steven (Jody) Highum both of Rushford; grandchildren; Alisha (Greg) Selthun, Erin (Jon) Monson, Joelle Anderson, Jacob (Erin) Highum, Tyler Highum, Timothy and Hannah Highum; great-grandchildren, Isabella and Isaiah Selthun, Seth and Ava Monson, Harper and Piper Highum. Also survived by adopted nephew, Richard Highum; multiple nieces and nephews; cousin Kristi Thompson, family pen-pal Doris Ridgwell, and Norway relatives.
Herb was preceded in death by his brothers; Asmund, Robert, George, and Glenn Highum, and a great-grandson Isaac Selthun.
Funeral Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rushford Lutheran Church with the Reverend Steve Chellew officiating. Burial will follow at Rushford Lutheran Cemetery. A visitation will be at church from 9-11 a.m. Saturday.
