Herbert "Herb" Eugene Breitweiser
Jerseyville - Herbert Eugene Breitweiser passed away November 13, 2025, a month shy of his 100th birthday. He was born December 12, 1925, in Delhi, Ill., to Fred and Lillie (Ross) Breitweiser.
Herb was the youngest of 12 kids and grew up on a farm with an orchard, dairy cows, horses, pigs, and chickens. He learned the value of hard work and a close-knit family at a young age.
After graduating 8th grade at Delhi's one-room school, Herb worked full time on the family farm. He later worked as a John Deere mechanic, a construction laborer, and farmed the land on which he was born.
Herb married Wilmetta (Pat) Myers on February 26, 1949. They enjoyed 57 years of marriage and raised seven children before she passed away in 2006.
Herb loved kids, the St. Louis Cardinals, Christmas, and John Deere tractors. He cussed like a sailor and could be stubborn as a mule, but he was loved by everyone who knew him. As his granddaughter said, "He's a burnt marshmallow; crusty on the outside but soft on the inside."
Herb had a great sense of humor, considered every game he ever played (including Bingo) a competitive sport, but most of all, he adored his family.
He will be sadly missed by his six surviving children: Vicki (Dennis) Williams of Jerseyville, Ron Breitweiser of Dow, Don (Susan) Breitweiser of Jerseyville, Linda Schaake of McClusky, Ross (Michelle) Breitweiser of Kane, Beth (Dennis) McGlasson of Jerseyville; daughter-in-law Luann Breitweiser of Jerseyville; and special family friends Larry Allen, Mike and Donna Schlemer, and Vernon and Wanda St. Peters.
He is also survived by 11 grandchildren: Bethany (Chris) Albert, Wendy (Kenny) Campbell, John (Jamie) Williams, Ashley (Travis) Lee, Tommy (Ally) Schaake, Jared, Jake, and John Breitweiser, and Meagan and Rachel McGlasson; 11 great grandchildren: Samantha Skau and Madison and Ruby Albert, Ian and Riley Campbell, Kellen and Griffin Williams, Ryan, Rylee and Ramsey Schaake, and Hayden Breitweiser. He also leaves behind one great-great-grandson, Oliver Follis; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; a son, John; son-in-law, Eldon Schaake; and 11 siblings: Frank, Faye Chappell, Dixon, Ed, Vida, John, Mary Miller, Fred, Emma Antrae, Pete, and Marjorie Beiser.
