Herbert Veal Hammett Jr. of Fayetteville, Georgia passed away on April 22, 2022.
Herbert was born January 9th, 1940 in LaGrange, Georgia to parents Herbert V. Hammett Sr. and Louise Pettett Hammett. After being raised in Hogansville, Georgia, he graduated from Presbyterian College in Clinton, South Carolina where he met his wife Julia Gray. Herb participated in many clubs and organizations throughout his life and was a proud Eagle Scout. He received a Doctor of Jurisprudence from Vanderbilt Law School (Class of 1969) and served 8 years in the United States Army as a member of the JAG Corps where he saw deployment in Vietnam and earned the Bronze Star Medal. After his time in the military he practiced law at Lyles, Hammett, Darr, and Clarke in Spartanburg, South Carolina where he gladly served as president of the Kiwanis Club and on Leadership Spartanburg. He and his family enjoyed the many years spent there.
Herb is preceded in death by his sister Nancy Hammett James of Washington, Georgia, and daughter-in-law Deborah Loutzenheiser Hammett, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He is survived by his wife of 60 years Julia Gray Hammett of Fayetteville; sister Margaret Hammett Hanson (Bill) of LaGrange, Georgia; children Edward Gray Hammett (Deborah) of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, and Leslie Hammett Jones of Fayetteville;; grandchildren James Matthew Loutzenheiser (Yoon) of Smyrna, Georgia, Edward Gray Hammett Jones, James Somerville Jones, Emma Catherine Jones; and many nieces and nephews.
He will be interred at a private ceremony at a later date.
