Columbia, South Carolina - The Funeral service for Lt. Col. Herbert Hulon Johnson, US Air Force (Ret.), will be held at 11 o'clock, on Friday, June 17th, at Shives Funeral Home, Trenholm Road Chapel, 7600 Trenholm Road Ext., Columbia. Burial with Military Honors will follow in Fort Jackson National Cemetery. The family will receive friends prior to the service beginning at 10 o'clock.
LTC Johnson died Saturday, June 4, 2022. A native of Belton, SC, he was a son of the late Thomas Otto Johnson and Ethel Broome Johnson.
Colonel Johnson began his military service in the US Navy as an Apprentice Seaman and was assigned to The Citadel under the Naval Aviation Program (v-5). He returned to The Citadel after his discharge from the Navy and graduated in 1950 with an A.B. degree. He was a distinguished military graduate. Colonel Johnson was appointed to the regular Air Force in 1958 and earned his Master of Science degree in Logistics Management from the Air Force Institute of Technology, Air University in 1963. During his Air Force career, Colonel Johnson served in nine major air commands and on the staff of the Joint Chief's of Staff (JCS). Nine of his 23 years of active duty were served overseas, including tours in the Artic, Europe and Pacific Theatres. He was a Veteran of the Vietnam War. His service awards include the Air Force Commendation Medal, the Joint Staff Commendation Medal and the Meritorious Service Medal.
After his retirement from the Air Force, Colonel Johnson was employed by the South Carolina Department of Mental Retardation as Director of the Division of Supply and Services. He retired in 1988.
Survivors include his daughter, Agnes Marilyn "Lyn" Mayberry (Paul) of Roswell, GA; sons, Harry Ethan Johnson (Suzanne) of Surfside Beach, SC, Clay Michael Johnson (Andrea) of State College, Pennsylvania, Hugh David Johnson (Alice) of Muncy, Pennsylvania; grandchildren, Heather Johnson, Melissa, Jennifer and Jaime Mayberry, Michael, Ashley and Matthew Johnson, Lauren and Travis Johnson, Ethan Johnson; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces, Carolyn, Mimi, Susie. Colonel Johnson was preceded by in death by his wife, E. Adelaide "Candy" Johnson; son, Herbert Lee Johnson; two sisters; and a younger brother.
