Herbert Newell Kelly
February 18, 1949 – February 5, 2026
Herbert Newell Kelly, known to many as "Herbalious," "Herbie Derbie," and most proudly as "Pops," passed away on February 5, 2026, just shy of his 77th birthday.
Born on February 18, 1949, Herbert lived a full and colorful life defined by hard work, deep love for his family, loyal friendships, and a personality that could never be forgotten. He spent 40 dedicated years working in the oil field, retiring in 2015 from Murphy Oil Corporation. Whether on land or in the middle of the Gulf of America, he took pride in his work and the life it provided for those he loved.
Above all else, Herbert loved his family immensely. He is survived by his devoted daughter, Jacqueline Kelly (Rock) Tolbert, who was the pride of his life. He was a proud grandfather to Amber Nicole Williams, Ariel Kellie Dubuisson, and Cody Luke Porter, and a joyful great-grandfather to Ayden William, Jaxon Williams, and James Porter. His love for his children, grandchildren, and great-grandsons was immeasurable, and he never missed a chance to brag about them. They were his greatest accomplishment and his deepest joy.
He is also survived by his brothers, Howard (Brenda) Kelly and Danny (Phyllis) Kelly, along with many extended family members and lifelong friends.
Herbert was a character in the very best way. Though he was "a cat about water," he somehow loved being on it-whether fishing for relaxation or working offshore. He loved riding his trike, even with his walker strapped proudly to the back, determined to keep moving and living life his way.
He was a familiar face around town, making his daily lunch rounds at Beef O'Brady's, Red Baron, American Legion Post 340, and finishing at his favorite watering hole, The Shack. For Herbert, these weren't just stops-they were places of friendship, storytelling, laughter, and connection. He would give you the shirt off his back-many can say he actually did-and all he ever wanted in return was time spent together and genuine friendship.
A lifelong NASCAR fan, Herbert made the pilgrimage to Talladega for 25 straight years until he was no longer able. He proudly witnessed the New Orleans Saints earn their trip to the Super Bowl, and he loved Mardi Gras and all things Cajun with a passion that reflected his vibrant spirit.
In accordance with his wishes, there will be no formal service or visitation. Instead, a Celebration of Life will be held at his favorite watering hole, The Shack, at a later date - just a big party, the way Herbert would have wanted it.
Herbert will be deeply missed, forever loved, and never forgotten.
