Herbert Kerley Obituary

Herbert David Kerley, 61, of Crossville, Tenn., passed away Tuesday, January 13, 2026. Born December 28, 1964, Herbert graduated from Carmichaels Area High School and dedicated six years to the United States Marine Corps (USMC) from 1984 to 1990, serving his country with distinction. Following his military service, Herbert joined Prairie State Generating Company LLC in 2012. He began his career as a control room operator and worked his way up to become a mechanical maintenance supervisor, a role in which he excelled due to his work ethic and leadership skills. Herbert was not only committed to his professional life, but also to his community, serving as a volunteer EMT and firefighter in Marissa, Ill. Described by those who knew him as a wonderful guy and an excellent worker, he was revered for his generosity and team spirit. He is survived by his spouse, Tammy Rutan Kerley; his son, Cody Kerley; sister, Treasa Wright and sister-in-law, Teresa Fogle; mother-in- law, Betty Rutan; niece, Patricia King; nephews, Patrick and Christopher Swartz; and several grand-nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son, Joseph Kerley; mother, Melba Patricia Shaffer; father, Herbert Hoover Kerley; sister, Martha Sweeney; and father-in-law, Floyd Rutan Jr. In line with his wishes, there will be no services. Herbert's life of service and commitment to his community will be remembered by all who knew him.

Herbie and I were supposed to join the Marines together, but I was rejected due to medical conditions. Herbie and I was members of the Crucible Volunteer Fire Company. Herbie was always a highly motivated individual. Rest easy brother, we got it from here.
