With great love and sadness, we announce that Dr. Herbert Samuel Levine (Herb), age 100, passed away peacefully on September 22, 2025 in Bridgeport, Connecticut.
Born on August 21, 1925, in Brooklyn, New York, Herb was raised and attended public schools in Brooklyn. After graduating from City College and New York University Dental School, Herb served as a Captain in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. Stationed in Salzburg, Austria, he provided dental services for U.S. military personnel and travelled extensively throughout Europe. After the war, Herb moved back to New York City. There, he met his life-long love, Irene Weinstein. They were married in 1958 and settled in Flushing NY, where Herb began his private dental practice. In 1970, Herb and Irene moved their family – children Wendy, Larry, Michael and Lisa – and Herb's dental practice to Somers, New York to raise their family in a more rural setting. Herb and Irene retired in 1996 and moved to Brewster, New York. During his long life, Herb lived through the Great Depression, World War II, the Holocaust, the Korean War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Space Race, the Vietnam War, the Fall of the Berlin Wall, the invention of cell phones and computers and the rise of the internet.
A violinist, Herb especially enjoyed playing and listening to classical music. He also loved jazz and attending all types of performing arts events. He and Irene were always active either playing tennis, alpine and cross-country skiing, hiking, cycling, traveling, or cooking. When he wasn't engaged with either his children, grandchildren, or great grandson, Herb was an avid reader, the New York Times and the New Yorker Magazine were never far from his reach.
Herb is survived by his daughter, Wendy Levey and her husband, Brian Levey of Stowe, VT, his son Larry Levine and his wife, Andrea Levine of Greenwich, CT, his son Michael Levine and his wife, Debbie Swanstrom of Rockville, MD and daughter, Lisa Florio of Danbury, CT as well as his grandchildren, Garrett Levey and his wife, Harley Joffe, Drew Levey, David Levine, Ben Levine, Lily Levine, Max Levine, Jake Florio, Samantha Florio and his great grandson, Cru Levey. Herb was predeceased by his wife, Irene Levine who died of ALS in 2001.
The funeral service will be held on September 26 at 11:00 at Abraham L. Green and Son Funeral Home, 88 Beach Road,
Fairfield, CT with visitation from 10:00-11:00, and a Livestream beginning at 11:00. A private burial will follow the service. Shiva will be held on September 27, at the home of Karen and Matt Langweber, 802 Wisteria Way, Wayland, MA from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Mozaic Senior Life, www.mozaicsl.org and the ALS Therapy Development Institute, www.als.net
