Greenfield, Indiana – Herbert E. Neal, 100, went peacefully home on June 19, 2025, after being comforted by his family and friends. This good and decent man will be profoundly missed.
Herb was born on February 13, 1925, to parents Herman and Nola (Martin) Neal in Indianapolis, Indiana, in his family’s home on Leeds Street. He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School and immediately joined the United States Army, where he served during World War II in the European Theater.
After the war, he moved back to Indiana, where he became a lineman for Indiana Power & Light until joining Indiana Bell Telephone Company.
Most importantly though, on September 5, 1947, he married the love of his life, Delilah Beatley. They remained together for 73 years until her passing on October 20, 2020.
Herb devoted his life to his family, spending all the time he could with them. He and Delilah loved to travel, their time in Alaska a particularly treasured memory. When not on the road, you could find them playing euchre with their friends, bowling, or golfing. Both Herb and Delilah devoted much of their time to their church, Woodside United Methodist.
In addition to his parents, Herb is preceded in death by his beloved Delilah, his siblings Stella Minnis (Russell), Nettie Frost (Howard), Hoy Neal (Ginny), Velma Harper (Bob), Christine Miscoi (Pete), Nadine Dorn (Jack).
He is survived by his children Sandra Harmas (Robert), Eric Neal, and Rebecca Schneidt (Gerald), grandchildren Jenna Murphy (Sean), Dan Harmas (Jessica), Kate Hickman (Matt), Frank Schneidt (Alyssa), Abe Schneidt (Katie), and Clarissa Young (Jake); great-grandchildren Karsyn, Colette, Nathan, Keira, Luke, Hunter, Ian, Matthew, Gabby, Andrew, Beckett, and Ainsley; as well as many nieces and nephews.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at Flanner Buchanan – Washington Park East (10722 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, Indiana, 46229) from 11 – 2 pm. Masonic services will begin at 2 pm with funeral services following at 2:20 pm. Burial will take place at Washington Park East Cemetery following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks for memorial donations to be made in Herb’s name to Good News Ministries (2716 East Washington Street, Indianapolis, 46201) and Zion Lutheran Church (6513 West 300 South, New Palestine, Indiana 46163).
