Herbert Lee Powell Sr., 63, son of Robert Earl Arrington and Cathrene (Powell) Arrington was born on January 12, 1962 in Halifax County North Carolina. Surrounded by his family on December 2, 2025 Herbert was called home to be with the Lord.
Herbert was a graduate of Roger L. Putnam Vocational High School in June of 1980, where he received his diploma in Auto Mechanics. Herbert was a decorated retired firefighter for the City of Springfield, Massachusetts Headquarters for 25 years until he retired in November of 2012.
On February 3, 2008 Herbert received a Citation Award for his bravery for a third floor window rescue.
Herbert was also a avid fisherman and a skilled hunter, he also loved cooking on the grill with Ronald Cooper Sr., who he considered his brother. He was also known as the grill master.
Herbert is survived by his wife Darlene (Lewis) Powell, of Springfield, Massachusetts, they were married for 29 years. Herbert is survived by his parents, Robert Earl and Cathrene (Powell) Arrington of Springfield, Massachusetts; two daughters: Theresa Lee Santos (Jose) of Yorktown VA., and India Elyse Powell; three sons, Jesse Lewis, Herbert Powell Jr., and Jermaine Powell all of Springfield, Massachusetts; his brother-in-law Willie (Sweet) Lewis, and Percy Lewis (Marilyn) of Tallahassee, Florida; 29 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.
He leaves behind seven sisters: Shirley Ann Powell; Carolyn Rene Powell; Joyce Bernice Arrington; Yvonne Arrington - Cooper (Ronald Cooper Sr.) all of Springfield, Massachusetts; Wanda Gene Arrington of Richmond VA; Ellen Marie Arrington (Roderick) Donna Mattos, and a host of nieces and nephews.
Herbert was predeceased by two uncles, Jonathan (Buck) Arrington and William Albert (Abbot) Arrington. To send flowers to the family or plant a tree in memory of Herbert, please visit our floral store.
