Herbert Schuurman Obituary

Schuurman, Herbert
SCHODACK - Herbert Schuurman, 93, passed away on Sunday, January 4, 2026, at Evergreen Commons Nursing Home, after a brief illness.
Herbert was born on the family farm in Schodack, N.Y., the son of Harry Schuurman and Agnes (Koller) Schuurman. He was blessed to share 66 years of marriage with the love of his life, his wife, Mary Lou. He worked on his family farm until 1969, and then held a career as a plumber with Pratt Plumbing and Heating, where he worked for over 50 years.
Herbert was a lifetime member of the Schodack Valley Fire Department for over 75 years, and later served as a Fire Commissioner. He enjoyed square dancing, camping, fishing, and attending car shows. He valued the friendships of Al Hirt, Art Carkner, and Larry Edson. Above all, Herbert cherished time spent with his wife, with whom he shared a love of travel, including memorable trips to 44 states (including Alaska and Hawaii) and Holland.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Schuurman; his three sons, Peter Schuurman, David Schuurman, and Scott Schuurman; his sister, Johanna Giuliano; three grandchildren, Allison Schuurman, Sarah Schuurman, and Daniel Schuurman; and three great-grandchildren, Noah Hamilton, Eva Hamilton, and Quinn Hamilton.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend calling hours on Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., followed by a service at 12:00 p.m., at the Wm. J. Rockefeller Funeral Home, 165 Columbia Turnpike, Rensselaer. Interment will follow at Horizonview Cemetery in Schodack.
Contributions in Herbert's memory may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

Many thanks to Herbie for his life-long friendship with Al, Art, and my father Larry. I always remember the silver-white Christmas tree for the New Year's Eve Party.

Herbie and Marylou came to Alaska with my dear late cousins Scotty and Margot Scott, they were also lifelong friends of theirs. They were very supportive when Scotty (Lloyd) and Margot became ill and died in 2021.
Many happy memories for the Bunk, Scott families.

Marylou, Peter, Dave and Scott, you are in our thoughts and prayers. Herb was always considered family and an invaluable part of our lives and business. We were very lucky to work with him for 50+ years. He was one of the hardest working and loyal friends I've ever had. He taught me that farmers can do anything! We will miss him!
