Obituary:
Herbert Bernard Steiner was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on December 8, 1929. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bella and Norman Steiner, and his brother, Stanley Steiner. Herb is survived by his wife, Shirley; his children, Natalie Elise Daughtry (Don) and Steven Marc Steiner (Sue); his grandchildren, Heather Michelle Bogan (Troy), Jacob Harris Perlmutter, Cara Ashley Hontz (Stephen), Brooke Bethany Steiner, Alexander Brown Daughtry, Ryan D. McCullen (Elizabeth Kimble), Kevin D. McCullen, Matthew V. McCullen, and Shawn C. McCullen; his great-grandchildren, Michelle Rose Bogan and Parker Davis Bogan; and sisters-in-law, Alberta Dolan (Jeff) and Barbara Steiner (Stanley).
Herb graduated from Northeast High School and graduated from Drexel University with a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering.
Herb enlisted and served eight years in the Naval Reserves.
Herb and Shirley met on a blind date in 1954, and he introduced her to his mother the next day. He told his mother that she was the girl he was going to marry. They were engaged shortly after and married within a year on March 20, 1955. They were married for 70 years.
Natalie was born three years later on February 14, 1958, and Steven was born three years after Natalie on June 15, 1961.
Throughout a career spanning 50 years, Herb worked for the City of Philadelphia as a Civil Engineer and left to work for Levitt & Sons. During his time with Levitt, he helped build cities in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Maryland, including his home of Bowie, Maryland, where he and Shirley resided for 43 years. Herb spent the final 26 years of his career working for Blake Construction in Washington, D.C., where he was involved in building the Holocaust Museum, the Asian and African American Museum, hospitals, science buildings for universities in Maryland and California, sewage treatment plants, offices and condo buildings, and the Swem Library for The College of William and Mary.
While living in Maryland, Herb served on the board and as Vice President of Congregation Nevey Shalom. Herb has many friends in Maryland and continued his friendships when he and Shirley moved to Cumming, Georgia, in 2005, after retiring from Blake Construction. They wanted to be near their daughter, although they missed their son and granddaughters in Maryland. Herb enjoyed living his last twenty years in a wonderful community in Muirfield, serving two terms as President of the Condo Association, and was happy with his life in Georgia.
Herb and Shirley enjoyed the theatre, traveling to Paris, London, Israel, Mexico, the Bahamas, and wonderful beach vacations.
He was a devoted husband and loved his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren dearly. He will be deeply missed and will always be in our hearts.
