Herman McAtee, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and community member passed away on October 1, 2024, at the age of 72. Born on February 23, 1952, in Little Rock, Arkansas, Herman lived a life that was rich in love, family, and cherished memories.
He is remembered fondly by his devoted wife of 52 years, Lois McAtee, and their three daughters: Angela McAtee, Sandra Stewart, and Jaime and Joe Yates. His legacy will continue through his grandchildren: Alexzandrea Lackey, Nicholas McAtee, and Julie Yates, all of whom held a special place in his heart. He is survived by his brother, Brent McAtee, and his wife Robin; his sister, Peggy Briley; and his sister-in-law, Carolyn Stevens. Additionally, he leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends who will always hold him dear.
Herman was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman "Pete" Charles and Shirley McAtee and Sidney and Wendell Gathright, as well as his grandparents, Sherman and Anna McAtee.
A faithful member of Owensville Baptist Church, Herman served as a deacon, embodying the spirit of service and devotion to his faith and community. He adored his family, often reflecting on the fond memories of breakfasts shared and events celebrated together.
Herman had a passion for reading, particularly enjoying Louis L'Amour Western novels. His love for the outdoors was evident in his favorite pastimes: fishing and deer hunting. Following his retirement, he embraced these hobbies further, spending delightful spring days fishing at Lake Ouachita and Lake Balboa.
A visitation will be held on Friday, October 4, 2024, from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at Smith Family Funeral Home, Benton Chapel, located at 322 N Market Street, Benton, AR 72015. Herman's funeral service will take place the following day, Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 9:30 AM at Owensville Baptist Church, 22000 AR-5, Lonsdale, AR 72087, followed by burial at Gravel Hill Cemetery located at 6259 AR-9, Benton, AR 72019. Assisting as pallbearers are: Clayton James, Aaron James, Mark Callihan, Jr., Kevin Bell, Matt Chapman, and his nephews: Michael Norris and Terry Stevens. Honorary Pallbearers are Tommy James, Rick Ellison, Randy Ellison, and Steven Lovell.
Herman McAtee will be missed profoundly by all who knew and loved him. His legacy of love, dedication to family, and commitment to his community will continue to inspire those he leaves behind.
