Herman Harvey Obituary

Herman S. "Bud" Harvey Jr. passed away on Sunday, Aug. 31, 2025, at 97. Born on Feb. 2, 1928, in Pottsville, he was the son of the late Dr. Herman S. Harvey Sr. and Anna (Potter) Harvey. He grew up in Schuylkill County and graduated from Mercersburg Academy in 1947. His early years in a small community were balanced between school, playing sports, and, as an early teen, learning the game of golf, which he played enthusiastically for decades. His Uncle Jack owned an independent neighborhood pharmacy during the years before and after World War II that served as a dispensary and local social hub, and Bud had his first job making ice cream sodas behind the soda fountain counter on weekends and during the summer. Pursuing a growing academic interest, he enrolled at the University of Pennsylvania in the fall of 1947 and subsequently earned a B.A. in History. The study of history, both American and world history, was a lifelong passion, one that remained strong all his years. Just prior to his Penn graduation, the Korean War had begun, and like many young American men at the time, he was drafted, and he served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. He did not report for duty, however, until celebrating with his sweetheart, Susanne "Sue" Suender, their wedding day in June 1951. Following two years of military service, Bud returned to Penn for his law degree, which he earned in 1956. A move to Pittsburgh followed, and the Harveys settled in Sewickley, becoming active members of the community. Bud joined the former law firm Blaxter, O'Neill, Houston & Nash and practiced law for over 56 years, retiring as senior counsel from the law firm Meyer, Unkovic & Scott. He was a member of the American Bar Association, the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and the Allegheny County Bar Association. Very involved in local politics, Bud worked tirelessly in support of the Civil Rights movement during the 1960s. A man of faith, he was a parishioner at St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Sewickley for over 50 years and served for a time on its vestry. During the past several years, he had very welcome and supportive relationships with both St. Stephen's Anglican Church and Sewickley Presbyterian Church. He was known by close friends and family as having a quick wit and a great sense of humor! In addition to his parents, Bud was predeceased by his wife of 66 years, Susanne (Suender) Harvey, in 2017. Surviving are two daughters, Ann (Christopher), of Alexandria, VA, and Elizabeth, of Portland, ME. Surviving also are six grandchildren, Amanda, Ben, Luke, Peter (Roxanne), John, and Emily; and two great-grandchildren, Miles and Serena. During these last months, Bud was so grateful to have a wonderful team of both family and private caregivers assisting him at home. The UPMC Hospice team was present for his last three months and fully compassionate and skilled in their work. The family extends unending gratitude for all who were part of his care! A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 15, 2025, at the historic Christ Church in Alexandria, VA. In the spirit of healing and brotherhood, two ideals close to Bud's heart, the family encourages contributions to organizations working to make the world a better place. Arrangements entrusted to R.D. COPELAND FUNERAL HOME, Irvine Chapel, Sewickley.
