Herman Skloss Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Mar. 4, 2025.
Herman Alois Skloss passed away on March 4, 2025, at Alfredo Gonzalez State Veterans Home in McAllen, Texas, at the age of 89. He was born on June 20, 1935, in Berg Mill, Texas, to Henry and Albina Skloss.

Herman's life was one of dedication, resilience, and service. He honorably served in the U.S. Navy for four years before continuing his commitment in the reserves for two decades. During this time, he was activated for two years of service in Vietnam. Following his military career, he settled in San Antonio and worked for Southern Pacific Railroad for 20 years. Retirement did not slow him down; he moved with his family to the Rio Grande Valley and assisted his cousin with Sascon Construction Company before eventually purchasing the business and leading it successfully for 32 years.

For 54 years, Herman and his wife, Carol, built a life filled with love and devotion. He is survived by Carol; their children Alois Herman Skloss, Roxane (Marty) Cook, Michelle Boyle, and Jason (Gina) Skloss; six grandchildren-Russell, Kyndall (Justin), Brittany (Daniel), Matthew, Aaron, and Seth; and three great-grandchildren-Parker, Hunter, and Emma.

In accordance with Herman's wishes, he will be cremated with no formal services. A celebration of life will take place at the home of his daughter at 4149 Fossil Fern in San Antonio, Texas, on Saturday, March 29, beginning at 1:00 p.m. (please contact for gate entry). Friends and family are invited to gather, share food, memories, and stories of the man they knew and loved.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in his memory.

Herman was 12 when I was born, so he referred to me as his baby sister. I remember he was always a doer, never sitting still, and funny as anything. When I was about 15 or so, he took me on vacation with him, Al, Roxane, Michelle and their mom to Disneyland. I was so excited to see a part of the U.S. I had never seen before. Today, it is so common to do that sort of thing, but this happened in 1964 or so, and it was such a treat. It really opened my eyes what the world offered outside of Martinez, Tx. There are also other ways he helped me, and I will always cherish the love he has shown to me and my daughters, Tamara and Tiffany. I will miss you so much, Herman, and I love you with all my heart. Rest in Peace.

There are so many great memories of my Uncle Herman. I´ll share just a few:
Our Smoky Mountain Christmas: our epic snowball fight, him saying, "Shut that damn kid up" on the flight and that kid not making a sound the rest of the flight. Those seated around chuckled and were also grateful.

He celebrated me receiving my first speeding ticket, which I received on my way down to the Valley. He gave me the biggest hug, said he was so proud of me, and told me we would go anywhere I wanted for dinner to celebrate.

Him and Jason singing Confederate Railroad´s Trashy Women at the top of their lungs while on our way to dinner. I still think of that to this day every time I hear that song.

When I asked him the difference between a farm road and a ranch road, and, without missing beat, he said, "On a ranch road, the houses are bigger".

He taught me so many things over the years. I will never forget my Uncle Herman and the time he so generously spent with me.

You will be greatly missed.

Awesome guy with an infectious personality that filled the room!! Loved his family, loved to fish and loved his dog!!! Herman gave so many practical, real-life proverbs: "there are only two categories of women: liability or an asset!!" You will be missed Herman. Thoughts, love & prayers are with Carol (Mama Skloss), Jason, Gina & all the rest of the family.
