Herschelene Powell Cook, 91, of Rossville, Georgia, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Tuesday, June 17, 2025. She was a loving wife, mom, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and daughter.
A lifelong resident of Walker County, Herschelene dedicated her life to education and service. As a beloved teacher, elementary school librarian, and charter member of Delta Kappa Gamma, she touched the lives of thousands of children and colleagues throughout her career. She will be remembered for her passion for learning, her compassion for students, and her unwavering commitment to excellence in education.
Born to the late Rev. Herschel and Irene Powell, Herschelene grew up in a home filled with faith and love. She graduated from Rossville High School, Class of 1952, and earned both her Bachelor of Arts in History and Master of Education in Secondary School Teaching degrees from the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, pursuing her calling as an educator with great joy and purpose.
Herschelene was a faithful member of First Baptist Church of Rossville, where she sang in the choir and generously volunteered her time with the churchs food bank ministry. Her kindness, quiet strength, and steadfast faith were a blessing to all who knew her.
She retired from the Walker County School System in 1995, after 38 years of distinguished service.
She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 57 years, Fred Glenn Cook, Jr.; her parents, Rev. Herschel and Irene Powell; her infant son, Roger Alan Cook; and brothers Samuel and Robert Powell.
Herschelene is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Fred G. (Karen) Cook III; her daughter and son-in-law, Ellen Denise (Marco) Cevenini; five cherished grandchildren, Jennifer (Shelton) Halstead, Courtney Cook, Ashley (Clifford) Knight, Sophia Cevenini, and Marco Cevenini; two beloved great-grandsons, Philip and Bryson Knight; and many extended family members and dear friends.
Herschelenes life was marked by faith, family, and a deep love of learning. Her legacy will continue in the hearts of the many lives she touched.
