Herschell grew up a preacher's child and went to school in Quanah and briefly in Chillicothe before he joined the Merchant Marines at the early age of 15. While in the Merchant Marines he was mostly stationed in the Marshall Islands, but did travel to Italy, France and Belgium. Upon returning home he finished high school and then made his way to Galveston which then he joined the army at the age of 18. While in the army he was stationed at Fort Townsend Washington. He was a corporal and an LCM boat coxswain but due to a toe injury he sustained while in a training mission in Hawaii he was discharged after only 3 years. He then returned home to Galveston which is where he met the love of his life Carolyn Jalufka who was working at CP Evans grocery store, from that point on they were inseparable, they were never seen without the other. They married in 1953 and were married for 54 1/2 years until her passing in 2007.
Herschell was employed at Dixon nail mill until the company moved to Houston at which point Herschell then was employed at Pennzoil company where he worked for 15 years until his retirement in 1992. All while he was employed, he along with other family members managed to open up Devoll's Drive-in in LaPorte, Texas and it remained open for 15 years. Herschell was the kind of man that could fix or make anything, there was nothing he could not fix, he was very talented. He also enjoyed being beside his nephew Lee learning about computers. He was very family oriented and loved spending time with family and friends and if he could not be with them in person, he was keeping up with everyone on Facebook. He was a religious man who had a deep-rooted faith in God.
Words cannot express the magnitude and greatness of Unckie or how deeply he is loved by all. Stories will be told for many years to come on how he touched our lives in some way. Even though he is no longer with us, he will remain in our hearts forever and will be greatly missed. As sorrowful as it is we are grateful to have had him in our lives and we are all better people because of it. Unckie was the epitome of love and kindness, and words cannot express how much he will be missed. May everyone take time to tell those close to you that you love them because we are not promised tomorrow. May God Bless you all.
