Hilary Chiz Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers from Nov. 2 to Nov. 3, 2023.
Do not be daunted by the enormity of the world's grief.
Do justly, now.
Walk humbly, now.
Love mercy, now.
You are not obligated to
complete the work, but neither are you free to abandon it.
~ the Talmud

Hilary 'Muffin' Luks Chiz, a dedicated lifelong advocate for justice and good troublemaking, died peacefully with her children by her side on October 22, 2023, in Asheville, North Carolina, after bravely battling pancreatic cancer. She was 78 years old. For more than 5 decades, Hilary was unwavering in her commitment to peace, civil rights, free speech, gender, social, economic and racial equality, workplace safety and fair wages for all.

Hilary was not only known for her well-informed, principled, and resolute opinions, but also for her remarkable ability to bring joy to the lives of those around her. Her energy was boundless, unmatched by most people half her age. Even in the darkest times, her indomitable spirit and keen sense of humor shone brightly. She shared deep connections with countless people, many of whom credit her with profoundly influencing their careers and lives. One close friend remarked, "She was a piece of work-tough, jocular, a damned good cook, a critical thinker, fearless, soft, hard, vulnerable, single-minded, broad-minded, so much more."

Born in 1945 in the Deep South in Birmingham, Alabama, Hilary's Jewish upbringing in the suburb of Mountain Brook instilled in her a strong sense of social responsibility. After graduating from Shades Valley High School in 1963, she married, moved to Shaw, Mississippi, and raised two children, Scott and Liz. She later earned a BA in English Literature from Colorado College in 1981.

Her lifelong dedication to social justice issues began with her career in the mid 1970s. While taking classes at Delta State University, she became Associate Editor of Delta Scene magazine. Attending the 1976 Democratic National Convention as an alternate delegate further fueled an interest in politics and was a turning point in her life. During her tenure with American Friends Service Committee, she wrote and edited 'Created Equal', a newsletter dedicated to gender equality in public education.Between 1985 and 2001 she served as Executive Director of American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) affiliates in Mississippi, Georgia, and West Virginia. She transformed ACLU-WV into the professional organization it is today, as its first ever Executive Director. In the early 1990s, she was Director of Development with Legal Services Alabama. From 2001 to 2006, she was Director of Special Projects with PACE (Paper, Allied-Industrial, Chemical and Energy Workers International Union) in Nashville. After a merger, she joined USW (United Steelworkers Union) in Pittsburgh from 2006-2013 as a specialist with the Civil and Human Rights Department. She is revered by colleagues as being a tireless trailblazer and a fierce defender of civil liberties.

Upon retiring to Asheville, North Carolina, in 2013, she enjoyed spending time in her garden, collecting art, cooking, supporting local live music, traveling overseas on educational group trips, and tending to her nest, always striving to create a warm welcoming home for her to sit quietly or to entertain friends and family. Her eclectic collection of treasures and art, as carefully chosen as her friends, paint a colorful picture of her well-lived life. Even in retirement, her dedication to making the world a better place was firm, as she volunteered with the ACLU of North Carolina, Health Equity Coalition, Racial Justice Coalition, and Green Opportunities. She was a guardian ad litem, a volunteer advocate for children navigating the court system. She continued her quest for learning with online classes in all things that interested or fascinated her.

Hilary Chiz was preceded in death by her parents, Sol and Bertha (Krantz) Luks and her sister, Judy Luks. She is survived by her brother Marc Luks, her children Scott Chiz (Leslie) and Liz Chiz (Richard Metawi), many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and cousins, as well as her wide circle of friends from around the globe, all of whom she loved deeply and unconditionally. A celebration of her remarkable life will be held at a later date.

Keep her light burning bright inside you and all around you, and never give up the fight for what is right and what is just.

I met Hilary at a Duke Robillard concert. We would become close friends sharing our love for music and the arts. She was very influential introducing me to many artists and styles of music that I still love today. She was an inspiration and gift to so many. I´m truly blessed to have shared the journey with her. Forever in my heart

I first met Hilary in 2001 or so at the George Meany Labor College in Silver Springs,MD; we were both attending a seminar on The Fundamentals of Corporate Research. We met one evening in the bar/game room on campus, started chatting, and became friends. I next saw Hilary in Nashville when I was there on business in 2003. She took me to her home, where she had one of my favorite New Yorker cartoons on her fridge. Then she took me to a country music club. Our special friendship lasted until her death. Since I was kinda sorta in the show business and love rhymes, I had a soft spot for her daughter, Liz Chiz, and wish I'd been able to meet her. I only just found out about Hilary and I wish condolences to her friends and family. She will be sorely missed.

Sharing political stories at our Feldenkreis class. She was always asking my opinion and such an advocate for justice. Fond memories.

I never met Hilary, but knew of her as she was a Facebook friend of of an old friend of mine, and I saw her posts now and then. I was always impressed with what she had to say. She seemed extraordinarily well read and well informed, and I always agreed with what she had to say. The world needs more people like this! I am certain she will be missed. May her memory be a blessing.

"Muffin" and I were classmates at Shades Valley High School in Birmingham, Alabama. After graduation in 1963, I don't believe our paths crossed again, and yet I still remember her so fondly -- feisty and funny! She was a pistol! And from what I understand, she went on to create quite a life worth living. No surprise there. God bless.

I met Hilary through pro-choice advocacy in WV, and she brought me onto the board of the ACLU of WV. As a young woman, she mentored and inspired me. So vibrant, passionate, fierce and funny! She did important meaningful work and brought others along with her. I feel so grateful to have known her.

Last fall, as Hilary traveled in Europe, she kept in touch with my own research travel. She asked questions and encouraged me in my journey despite our different faith perspectives. I could sense her own excitement with each country and site she visited, and I was grateful to travel along with her vicariously. I´m so glad she made that trip.

I never met Hilary in person. We became Facebook friends because we had mutual friends who introduced us on line and thought we might enjoy sharing ideas. I loved her spirit and am so sad we will never meet in person.

Only met Hilary in person once: white water rafting outside of Pittsburgh. She hast no fear as we paddled through the rapids, inspiring me to embrace the day. Thereafter, I became a "FB Friend" and I continued to be inspired by her. What a legacy of good works and service! May her memory be a blessing to her granola and all whose lives she touched.

My favorite memory of Hilary was the first day of our Road Scholar Paris and Normandy adventure in 2014. It was at Charles de Gaulle airport. The beautiful woman said "Hi, I'm Hilary and you are," I said "Barbara. She replied, "Look out Paris, Barbara and Hilary are here. Her warmth and friendship was a gift to me the past nine years.
I'm proud to have met her.

What a great loss. My interaction with Hillary was at staff and biennial conferences of the ACLU. She was so energetic and fun and very good at her chosen job. I know many friends will miss her vibrant spirit. Joann Bell, Executive Director, ACLU of Oklahoma 1990-2011.

Muffin and I worked together in Boulder in the 1980s. I will always remember her as a beacon of style, devoted to the truth and valued her fierce approach to getting things done.

We met Hilary when she moved to our neighborhood in West Asheville and became fast friends. Like the best of my lady friends, she was fierce, compassionate, unapologetic, and wildly herself. We shared a love of gardens and plants, trading favorites and seeds annually. She taught me that friendship is, in fact, a verb...and I will forever treasure the collection of memories she gifted me.

I met Hilary in Mississippi when she ably and courageously led the Mississippi Chapter of the ACLU. That was my first sign of what a force of nature she was for things like justice, civil rights and personal freedom. She carried on her work for the public good every day thereafter. I'm so grateful that when we each retired we chose the same beautiful part of the country and reconnected here. I am glad that Hilary was born and that she lived a full life and that I knew her and that she inspired me until the end. I wish we could have had her with us longer is all. My thoughts for peace and comfort to her family. I will miss her as the fun and intelligent friend that she was and miss knowing she is here doing the important work of social justice that so motivated her life. We lost a real champion on her death.
