Horace W. "Moe" Baumer, having lived a long life of 110 years, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2023, at the Gardens at York Terrace.
Born on Dec. 17, 1913, he was a son of the late Clifford and Ruth Williams Baumer.
Horace graduated from Girard College.
He first worked as a truck driver, hauling coal to Philadelphia. He later served as a waiter for nine years at the former Felsburg's Luncheonette, Minersville. During World War II, he worked as a foreman for the Army Vehicle Restoration program at ALCOA, Cressona. He returned to the coal industry, working for the former Capparel Stripping & Construction Company, the Oak Hill Colliery, as a repairman. He retired as a millwright from Bethlehem Steel at Grace Mine in Morgantown.
He was a member of the former English Lutheran Church, Minersville.
He was also a member of the Girard College Alumni Association and a life member of the Mountaineer Hose Company, Minersville.
Horace was known for his love of gardening, fishing, fire fighting, parades and church.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 62 years, the former Genevieve V. Petchkofski; four children, all at birth, Joseph, David, Harry and Genevieve; and a niece, Ruth Yanulevich and her spouse, Mike Yanulevich.
Moe is survived by the Rachelle and Lonnie Smith family; the Mike and Tammy Yanulevich family; and the Greg and Lori Vernosky family. Many great friends that Moe also considered as family include the Marty and Jennifer Stoyer family; the Joan Laudeman family; and the Dave Anspach family.
Those who knew Moe are invited to pay their respects at Dutcavich Funeral Home, 200 Sunbury Street, Minersville, on Thursday, from 10 a.m. until services at noon. Interment will follow in Mount Peace Cemetery, Branch Township. In lieu of flowers, Moe would want his friends to support his fellow firefighters by making a donation in his memory to Mountaineer Hose Company, P.O. Box 754, Minersville, PA 17954.
