DeVargas Funeral Home and Crematory - EspanolaHorace Leyba, 68, a lifelong resident of Canjilon, NM, passed away peacefully on October 6, 2025, after a lengthy illness.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jose M. Leyba Jr. and Sarita Leyba, daughter Vanessa Leyba and brothers in law, Roger Gonzales and Ernie Salazar.
He is survived by his son Jose and daughter Angela Leyba, beloved granddaughters Alysia and Emma Leyba.
Horace leaves behind his siblings: Rosalina Morales (Ray), Viola Leyba, Benjamin Leyba (Joann), Elaine Gonzales, Josie Salazar, Debby Lucero (Steve), Frances Herrera (Mark), David (Lea), along with his many nephews and nieces.
Horace spent most of his life in Canjilon, where he dedicated his early years to the building and road construction trades. In 2003, he retired from the New Mexico Department of Transportation. Following his retirement, Horace was able to pursue his passion for woodworking, sharing his craftsmanship at local art festivals.
He also served his community as secretary/treasurer of the Canjilon Cattle Growers Association and as a board member of the Upper Chama Soil and Water Conservation District.
Horace was known not only for his work ethic and creativity, but also for his love of cooking and sports. He was an avid fan of the UNM Lobos, the Boston Celtics, and the Pittsburgh Steelers teams he supported with great enthusiasm.
Services will be held on Monday, October 20, 2025, with Rosary to be recited at 10:00 a.m., Mass to follow at 11:00 a.m. in Canjilon, NM, at San Juan Nepomuceno Catholic Church. Burial will follow at the Canjilon Cemetery.
