Horst R. Bernhardt, 87, of Bethel Park, passed away on June 5, 2024.
His loss is profoundly mourned by family and friends, both here in the U.S., as well as overseas. Horst was born on April 15, 1937 to Richard and Frieda Bernhardt of Michelbach, Germany. He was the only child of his parents, and the apple of their eyes. After completing his schooling in Germany, he became a mechanical engineer, primarily working for businesses that serviced the coal mining industry. Throughout his career, he traveled extensively, making friends all over the United States, Canada, Europe, and Australia. Horst had many hobbies, from playing the violin and the saxophone, to bicycling, and traveling the world, cycling and horseback riding.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Gudrun (Weber) Bernhardt, and his second wife, Anna M. (Rajnovic) Bernhardt as well as his step children, Glenn Rajnovic and Steve Rajnovic. Horst is survived by his children, Heike and Kirstin, and his step children, Robert and Jill, as well as his grandson, Joshua, and his step grandchildren, Hanna, Perry, and Elliot, and their families. Horst’s sense of humor, generosity and warmth are irreplaceable, and he will be greatly missed by all who loved him.
The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Kane-Scott Nursing Home, Scott Township, as well as the staff of Gallagher Hospice. Their exceptional care and compassion provided comfort to Horst and his family during his final days, and their kindness will never be forgotten.
Friends and family are invited to a viewing from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM on Sunday, June 9, 2024 at FREYVOGEL-SLATER FUNERAL DIRECTORS, 112 Fort Couch Rd., Bethel Park, (Opposite Macy’s South Hills Village) 15241 (412-835-1860).
