Howard B. Boiko, 84, of Silver Spring, Maryland, passed away on October 14, 2021 at Holy Cross Hospital, surrounded by his family. He had been in declining health following a fall at home earlier in the year, and bore his increasingly serious medical challenges with determination and dignity to the end.
Born in New York City in 1936 to William and Yetta Boiko, Howard moved to Washington, D.C. at age 3 and was raised there with his sister, Vivien. He completed his education in the Army, where he worked in the motor pool. In 1962, he became a printer apprentice, and he worked for The Washington Post until his retirement. Howard enjoyed playing pool and shuffleboard, hunting (though he conspicuously and likely deliberately never bagged a deer), and good times with friends and family.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Eleanor S. Boiko; children, Lynn M. Carlsen (John), Deborah A. Greene (John), and Daniel M. Boiko (Cris); grandchildren, Damian, Matthew, Delia, Liam, and Evan; and sister, Vivien Miller (Ron), as well as loving nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends. A graveside service was held at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Adelphi, Maryland, on Monday, October 18, 2021. Please consider making a donation in his memory to the American Heart Association, the National Kidney Foundation, or American Legion Charities.

Dear Eleanor and Family,
I want you all to know how much I admired and appreciated knowing Howard.
I considered him a valued and dependable friend, and was an ally when I needed one the most.
He helped those whom needed it and asked nothing in return. He was a good judge of character and saw through those who lacked it, as well as those, who were just "characters."
I have missed Howard for many months, and I will continue ... My prayers and sympathy to all of you.
