Howard Deel Obituary

Howard Gradie Deel, 83 of Delaware, passed away peacefully with his family by his side Thursday afternoon, September 11, 2025, at his residence. Born June 23, 1942, in Grundy, Virginia, the son of the late Willoughby and Marita Catherine Deel.

Howard joined the United States Army in 1960, during the Vietnam War. He served his country for over 25+ years and retired from the United State Army in 1990. During his time in the military, Howard received a Silver Star and an Army Commendation Metal with Device, his rank rose to First Sergeant. He was a Proud Veteran and Patriot but did not boast his military experience to anyone. He was honored and placed into the Ohio Military Hall of Fame.

After being honorably discharged and returning home Howard would go on to receive his GED and attended night classes to become a social worker. He retired from Franklin County Human Services after twenty years of service.

Left to cherish his memory are his son Chad; daughter Jill Ann Deel; eight grandchildren; sister Doshie Ratliff; sister-in-law Betty Deel; numerous great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; his beloved beagle Bear.

Howard was preceded in death by his wife Patsy Ann (Chafin) Deel in 2013 and daughter Michele Lynn Holkum, brother Vadie Deel and brother-in-law Otis Ratliff.

Howard was a true patriot and took honor in serving his country. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, playing Chinese checkers and rummy. He was a breakfast connoisseur and enjoyed going to his pond on his property to sit and watch the ducks and fish. Those close to Howard will remember him as the lovable, giving, respectful and sometimes stubborn man that he was.

Pastor Eric Sapp will officiate funeral services celebrating the significance of Howard's life at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, September 17, 2025, at the Snyder Funeral Center, 101 Valleyside Drive, where friends may join the family from 10 a.m. until the time of the service. Burial will follow after the service at Evergreen Memorial Cemetery, in Lewis Center, Ohio, where the Delaware County Veteran Association will provide military honors.
