Obituary published on Legacy.com by Weil Kahn Funeral Home on Sep. 16, 2024.
Howard Gelbart, MD (80) passed away September 14, 2024. Barbara, his devoted wife and partner of 20 years, predeceased him. He is survived by his son Michael (Wincha) and daughter Melissa (Paul) as well as his two grandchildren, Mila and Kai.
Howard is also survived by his siblings, David, Steven, Jib, and Sheryl, their spouses and extended families as well as Edie Neusner, his close companion of many years.
Born in New London, CT, to Rabbi Bernard Gelbart and Lillian Gelbart (nee Brotter), Howard had a successful career as an OB/GYN. He was passionate about community health and made significant contributions to tuberculosis research and prevention in the Cincinnati metropolitan area. Howard resided in Wyoming, OH, where he and Barbara raised their children, Michael and Melissa, both of whom continued in their father's footsteps helping others; Michael as a practicing physician in Dayton, OH, and Melissa as a victim and witness advocate in Sacramento, CA.
Sharing his philosophy of life, Howard was a prolific writer of prose and poetry. He believed that caring, sharing, and humility were cornerstones of how to move through life ~ traits he aspired to.
Howard loved all genres of music, attending concerts and collecting music memorabilia to which he dedicated an entire room in his home. He shared his passion for music with his children and grandchildren. Melissa and Howard enjoyed many motorcycle trips and even more concerts over the years.
Chocolate ~ another love which he shared with his grandchildren... he always miraculously produced a Dove candy for each whenever they were together.
His family, especially his grandchildren, brought him special joy and light. They gave him purpose and shared a very special bond. Nothing brought him more happiness than attending Mila's and Kai's school concerts, soccer games, and birthday/holiday celebrations.
He enjoyed cooking and baking. Family Shabbat and holiday dinners prepared by he and Edie were always a treat. His sweet potato casserole at every Thanksgiving was always the star of the meal.
May he rest in peace, and may his memory be a blessing.
