FITCHBURG: Howard J. Rivers, 79, a lifelong Fitchburg resident, passed away peacefully, Friday March 3, 2023 at Health Alliance – Leominster Hospital.

Mr. Rivers was born in Fitchburg, May 14, 1943, the son of Alfred J. and Irene L. (Valliere) Rivers. During the Vietnam War, Mr. Rivers served his country for four years in the United States Navy. During hois military service Mr. Rivers was stationed in Okinawa, Japan, the Phillipines and Winter Harbor, Maine and attained the rank of Communication Tech 2nd class. He was presented with many medals for meritous service including two Air Medals and the Vietnam Campaign Medal,

He worked many years at Fitchburg State College as a Staff Assistant in the Communications Media Department. He was a member of St. Joseph's Church and the former Madonna of the Holy Rosary Church and served as an Extraordinary Minister at both churches.

He was a Life Member of the American Legion Post # 429 in Fitchburg as well as the Disabled American Veterans. He participated in the Amateur Radio Relay League of 1959 and was a member of several area sporting clubs including the Rod & Gun Clubs in Townsend and North Leominster.

He leaves several cousins, a niece and many longtime friends.

He was predeceased by his sister, Cecile Semon.

Funeral services will be held 12:30 PM Thursday, March 9, 2023 at the Isabelle & Anderson Funeral Home, 316 Clarendon Street, Fitchburg. Interment will follow at Massachusetts Veterans Cemetery, Winchendon.

A visitation period will be Thursday from 11:30 - 12:30 PM in the Funeral Home.
