HOWARD SMITH

1949 - 2023

HOWARD SMITH, 74 years of age of Poplar Creek, Grundy, VA, passed away Tuesday, August 15, 2023, at his home. Born in Buchanan County, he was the son of the late David and Lucy (Rice) Smith. Howard married Carolyn "Susie" Deel on January 27, 1968. Howard, or "Snuffy," as he was known at work, worked for United Central Supply at Big Rock for 40 years. He made many friends through the years driving tractor trailers all over Southwest Virginia, West Virginia and Kentucky. He loved to hunt, fish, camp and the outdoors. He spent many hours in the hills with his son and grandsons teaching them the things he knew.
He was preceded in death by his parents, David and Lucy (Rice) Smith; grandson, David Smith II; father and mother-in-law, Buddy and Betty Fay Deel.
Those left to cherish his memory include his wife of 55 years, Carolyn "Susie" (Deel) Smith of Grundy, VA; two sons, David Edward (Yvonne) Smith of Germany, Bobby Joe Smith of Grundy, VA; three grandsons, Patrick Smith of Germany, Canaan Smith and Brent Smith of Abingdon, VA; one brother, David Smith of Grundy, VA; two sisters, Martha Cox and Mary Deel of Harman, VA; and a host of friends and family. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Friends called at the Grundy Funeral Home Chapel Friday evening at 6:00 p.m. with services at 7:00 p.m.
Funeral services for Howard Smith were conducted Saturday, August 19, 2023, at 1:00 p.m. at the Mountain Rest Mausoleum at Mountain Valley Memorial Park, Big Rock, VA, with Pastor Eddie Wilson officiating with entombment following.
Active pallbearers were David Smith, Jamie Perkins, Canaan Smith, Brent Smith, Bobby Joe Smith, Jessie Keen, Shannon Sykes, Rusty Sykes, Nick Keen, Brian Cox and Patrick Smith.
Honorary pallbearers were Junior Keen, Don Ramey, J.W. Taylor, J.G. Patel, Matt Cox and Evan Sykes.
