Dr. Howard Earl Snyder, 67, of Charleston, SC, husband of Mary Anne Snyder, passed away peacefully at his home Friday, June 30, 2017. Dr. Snyder was born on September 27, 1949 in Charleston, the son of Mrs. Sara Snyder and the late Dr. Gilbert Snyder. Dr. Snyder is a third generation Charlestonian who graduated from Charleston's The Gaud School for Boys in 1967 and subsequently attended college at Emory University where he finished in three years in 1970 and was a member of Alpha Epsilon Upsilon Honorary Society. He was awarded a Navy Dental Scholarship and accepted at The University of North Carolina School of Dentistry where he received his DDS in 1974. Dr. Snyder served on Active Duty in San Diego at the end of The Vietnam War during which time he cared for many naval and marine personnel before they were sent overseas. He then entered the Naval Reserve where he served on a Nuclear Submarine Tender at the Naval Weapons Station in Charleston for six years as a Naval Reserve Officer. Dr. Snyder practiced general dentistry for 40 years in the Downtown Charleston Medical University Area and was a member of the American Dental Association, the South Carolina Dental Association, and the Coastal District Dental Society. Throughout his career, Dr. Snyder was always most interested in providing care for all of his patients in a comfortable environment during which time he could become familiar with their families and life stories. His wisdom and knowledge were paramount to all who knew him. He was most passionate about his family, spending time with his wife, daughters, their husbands and his grandchildren who affectionately knew him as "H." Throughout his life, he could often be found on the racquetball courts at the MUSC Wellness Center, on his boat navigating the rivers on which he was raised, and voraciously reading whenever possible. Upon his retirement, he enjoyed traveling with his wife and spending time with their many close friends and family, all of whom will remember him for his acumen and intellect. He is survived by his loving wife, Mary Anne Snyder; and his children, Jenna Snyder Skaff (Richard) of Davidson, NC, Nessa Snyder Warley (Caldwell) of Charleston, SC ; grandchildren: Richard Joseph Skaff III (Treyton) and Edward Simmerman Skaff (Sims) of Davidson, NC, John Caldwell Warley IV (Wells) and Addington Eliza Warley (Addie) of Charleston, SC; Mother, Sara Friedman Snyder, of Charleston, SC; siblings, Gary Snyder (Pam) of Charleston, SC, Denice Leebow (Kenneth) of Atlanta, GA as well as many nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held Monday, July 3, 2017 in Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Congregation (90 Hasell St. Charleston, SC) at 11:00 am, followed by a graveside committal in the Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim Cemetery (Huguenin Avenue). The family of Dr. Snyder will be receiving visitors Monday, July 3, 2017 at 320 Hidden Bottom Lane, Daniel Island, between 3:00 and 8:00 p.m. Arrangements by J. Henry Stuhr, Inc., Mount Pleasant Chapel. How lucky I was to have been referred by a co-worker to Dr Snyder in 1979. Later after I married, he became my husband's dentist and then to our daughters as well. What a wonderful man! We certainly missed him after his retirement. Our sincere sympathy to the family. Jim and Carol Robinson

It was with great sadness that I heard of Dr. Snyder's passing. I'd been a patient of his for most of his time in practice. I was extremely nervous about dental appointments, all those years ago. Dr. Snyder was patient and kind and made every effort to make me comfortable, as did his entire staff. My husband became a patient of his, a few years after me. I speak for us both in extending condolences to his family during this time of loss and hope that the good memories and love carry you through the coming years.

My deepest sympathy to the family.

Dr. Snyder was already missed from the practice. He will be deeply missed by me and my family. I often reminded him that he was around long enough to care for 3 generations of my family. He was a true gentleman, a great dentist, and showed character and compassion in all that he did. I was so sadden to hear about his death and am so sorry that I missed the service. Rest in peace Dr. Snyder. Family and former office staff/partners, you have my deepest condolence.

To the Snyder family, my sincere condolences on your loss. I was a patient of Dr. Snyder for many years and he was just a wonderful man. I selfishly didn't want him to retire but now I am so glad he did when he did so he could enjoy those last years with his family. God bless him and all of you.

Dear Mrs. Snyder, and family members, I was his patient over 25+ years. I jokingly told him that I helped put his daughter through college. When my other friends talked about how much they hated their dentist, I told them how much I loved mine. He was absolutely wonderful, and I always enjoyed my visits with him and his staff. I remember how he allowed me to interrogate him about the sterilization of the dental instruments after the scare in Florida (many years ago). He giggled when he talked about his grandchildren. After each of my visits, he would put his hand on my shoulder and say "alright girl, I'll see you later".

He was a super talented dentist who embraced technology, a caring human being, and just a real nice man! I'll miss him!

Again, my deepest sympathies go out to you, his staff and all of his patients that he took great care of all the years he practiced his art of dentistry.

Dr Snyder has imprinted the hearts of everyone he got to know with love and tenderness. I am a better person and dental professional today because of his teachings. He will be so much missed.

July 3, 2017

The world has lost one of the finest persons we will ever know. He was kind, and thoughtful, and always thinking about the needs of others. I had the privilege of going to Gaud School with him, and then having my daughter go to school with Jenna, and my wife and I know Mary Anne. They all gave us so much, and Howard was a dear friend. I will miss him greatly. Tom Stevenson

We were blessed to have Howard and MaryAnn as our next door neighbour and friend for the last couple of years. There was never a time he didn't have a smile or warm greeting for us. Howard was the type of person that if you asked him to jump up and down on one foot he would do it because he knew it would make you happy.

Even after 40+ of marriage he was still in awe of Maryann's ability to spin her magic at the events she did. His love and respect for her was awe inspiring. Howard we will miss you terribly but we are grateful that you were in our lives. We will watch out for your beloved Maryann. We love you Howard.
