Howard C. "Butch" Wintermute, age 82, of Ovid passed away at home on February 14, 2025.
Born on December 20, 1942, in Waverly, New York, he was the son of Howard Wintermute Sr., Pauline (Ball), and Robert Wintermute. He honorably served in the United States Army as a paratrooper, a chapter of his life that he would never forget. Butch spent many years immersed in the world of leather milling, where he served as a foreman and supervisor at Fashion Tanning and H & J. His presence in the workplace was a testament to his strong work ethic. Beyond the confines of his job, Howard was a man of many passions. An avid go-kart racing enthusiast, he was proudly known as #60 on the racetrack. Butch also enjoyed painting and drawing and he took great joy in the art of fixing and repainting cars. Later in life he delighted in playing Xbox and taking electric scooter rides to downtown Ovid with his friend Rick.
He is survived by his children, Rob Wintermute, Karla (Jim) Carpenter, Jodi (Scott Allen) Polley, and Tammi (Michael) Pierce; many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; siblings Judy (Robert) Carter, Marlene (Reggie) Wintermute, Pauline (Paul) Krawczyk, Dale (Wayne) Wintermute, Roberta (Alex) Ricciardi, Janie (Larry) Johnson, and Mike Wintermute; and many special cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends at Verona Village.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Shirley Wintermute; son Jason Wintermute; daughter Kelli Wintermute; grandson Andrew Wintermute;, brother Calvin; and sister-in-law Carol Wintermute.
The Wintermute family wishes to extend heartfelt gratitude to the nurses at the Dialysis Center in Geneva for their excellent care over the years, recognizing the compassion and dedication that surrounded Howard during his later days.
The family will be present to receive friends from 1:00 to 2:00pm on Wednesday, February 19, 2025 at Covert Funeral Home, 7199 Main Street, Ovid. A Funeral Service will immediately follow at 2:00pm at the funeral home. Burial and military honors will be held in the Spring at Ovid Union Cemetery.
