Hubert Jackson Black Sr., born May 7, 1931 in Georgiana, AL and lifelong resident of Mobile, AL passed away at 93 in his home on Sunday, August 11, 2024 at 5:07pm. He is preceded in death by his father, Leston Leonard Black, his mother, Ruth Hicks Black and his son, Hubert (Hugh) Jackson Black, Jr. He is survived by his wife, Opal L.(Boykin) Black, daughters; Le Anne Fountain and Kelle (Darrin) Lane, grandchildren; Le Tara (Glen) Fisher, Robert (Kayla) Coury, Hubert (Jay) Jackson Black, III (Melissa) Black, Jessica Black, Hunter Cameron, Hannah Cameron and Anna Lane plus 9 great-grandchildren.
Hubert's family was his pride and joy, he loved and adored his wife of 60 years. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren made him so proud every single day and he always welcomed them and their friends into his home. A greeting card was selected by him and purchased for every birthday and you can bet it was the best card on the shelf. Although he didn't get to see many of his great-grandchildren, he loved them just the same and kept an eye on all of their Facebook pictures and posts through the years.
His friends were very much a big part of his life, and although many had gone ahead of him, he cherished the cookouts, cruises, football games, Mardi Gras balls and many other events that they attended together. SEC Football was definitely his favorite and Bama certainly landed at the top of that list, but he supported and attended many games at LSU, Auburn and MS State.
He was hard working all of his life, working for Smith's Bakery, Jack's Cookies, Ralph's Garlic and Spices, retired and obtained his real estate license to sell homes for a few years, with Roberts Brother's, retired again then continued to work until after he turned 90, delivering auto parts for O'Reilly's. Yes, that means he drove his own car until after he was 90 years old. After a days' work, he did the grocery shopping and enjoyed spending a few minutes with the guys at Patches from time to time.
Visitation will be held at Mobile Memorial Gardens Funeral Home on Three Notch Road in Mobile, Alabama, on Thursday, August 15, 2024. Family members should arrive at 10:30am and friends are welcome between 11:00am - 12:00pm. A short service will start at 12:00pm in the visitation room or chapel. Graveside services will not be held.
Please feel free to share any special memories you have of Hubert or maybe a funny joke that he told you, we would love to hear about them all. He was absolutely one of a kind, was loved beyond measure and will be sorely missed.
