Hugh D. Cunningham, 78, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 26, 2025.
Hugh was born in Muncie on September 18, 1947, the son of Joseph L. and Mary Louise (Workman) Cunningham. He graduated from Muncie South Side High School in the class of 1965 and was drafted into the Army but joined the U.S. Navy instead. He did training in Great Lakes, Illinois and San Diego, California and then was onto Guam and the Philippines. After that he was in Dang Vietnam from 1967 until 1969. While in the Navy he was awarded three bronze stars.
After leaving the Navy he worked at Brooks Paint, Duffy Tool, Muncie Gear, and also owned his own auto body shop, Dave's Auto Body Shop, in Parker City. He also ran the body shop at Bill McCoy Ford for many years. He was also an auto claims adjuster for 25 years for Farm Bureau Insurance for 25 years. He also owned a 1951 Chevy and a 1972 Chevelle and traveled to numerous car shows with the Piston Poppers Car Club showing off his cars.
Hugh is survived by his wife, Durinda Cunningham; children, Kyle Cunningham (Casey), Tamee Randall Monroe (James), and Eric Randall (Jessica); grandchildren, Skylar (Keihn) Shayleigh Cunningham, Colt Cunningham, Laycee Winkle (Cammeron), Aireeka Monroe (Jarrid), Davion Monroe (Bayleigh), Gabrielle Cone (Drake), Chase Randall, Peirce Randall, Caleb Randall; bonus grandchildren, Tony Bennett and Gracie; great-grandchildren, Draven Keihn, Hadleigh Keihn, Michael B. Winkle, Hugh B. Winkle, Aleeyah Monroe, Charlee Bennett, Maggie Monroe, Chevy Monroe, Walker Monroe, Leo, Enberly and Kellan; siblings, Joe Cunningham (Karen) and Mike Cunningham (Kimbra).
Hugh was preceded by his parents and sister, Peggy Hewitt, and brother-in-law, Mike Hewitt.
A funeral service will be held at 12:00 p.m. on Friday, January 2, 2026, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel with Pastor John Tyner officiating. Burial with military honors will follow at Beech Grove Cemetery.
Friends and family may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service on Friday, January 2, 2026, at The Meeks Mortuary and Crematory, Washington Street Chapel.
Hugh's family would like to thank Southern Care Hospice, Corner Stone Caregiving, and the staff at Anderson Cancer Center for all of the care that was shown to Hugh.
