Hugh Curbow Obituary

Published by Legacy on Jan. 2, 2025.
On December 30, 2024, our sweet Daddy, Hugh Jackson Curbow Sr., peacefully left us at the age of 92. The legs that failed him in his later years were restored, allowing him to run into the welcoming arms of Jesus. Awaiting his arrival home were his loving wife of 60 years, Mary Linda Curbow, his parents Clifford, and Rose Curbow, his son Hugh Jackson Curbow Jr., all of his siblings, numerous nieces and nephews, and his beloved poodle, Sugar Bear. He was surely welcomed home by many that went before him, but none more special than his wife, whom he missed dearly. Our hearts are broken, but we rejoice knowing he is restored and rejoicing with those he loved.
A devoted husband, father, Papa, Granddaddy, brother, uncle, and friend, Hugh spent his life in the Atlanta area. His formative years were spent around Grant Park, where his love of the Atlanta Braves and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets were formed. As a stadium ticket taker, he loved his interactions with locals and fans. A Korean War veteran, Army SGT Hugh J. Curbow served our country honorably as a Military Policeman in Times Square and overseas. After breaking his back in a life-altering fall from his motor home, Hugh retired from his career spanning more than 20 years as a forklift driver for Kraft Foods. Despite years of surgery and recovery, Hugh never stopped smiling, fighting, making others laugh, and providing for his family. As the leader of the family, providing was important to him and he held many jobs in his lifetime including delivering pizza for Pizza by Candlelight and driving a street sweeper truck. In his 70's he very much enjoyed his time at BJ's Wholesale Club as a food sample demonstrator. Hugh was personable, funny, and a lover of people. He never met a stranger.
Along with his wife Linda, he loved on, poured into, and modeled a Christ-centered home for countless children through their work with their state licensed in-home daycare, Linda's Babies. Known as Miss Linda and Papa Hugh, the pair were an extra set of grandparents for the children.
Hugh was also a lover of all things sports! It wasn't unusual for him to have a game on every TV in the house watching football, baseball, and NASCAR. When asked who he was rooting for his response was always the same: "Whoever is winning". He loved playing cards and even at 92 he could beat his opponent at nearly every card game played. He was sharp with numbers and a lover of competitions.
A Christian who had fond memories of walking to church with his Momma and singing gospel music, Hugh was a member of First Baptist Church of Cumming, GA. When his mobility prevented in-person attendance he watched the live streamed services. He enjoyed watching sermons on TV, listening to Gaither's gospel music and reminiscing about old hymns he sang with his Momma. More than once, he told us he was ready to go home. We rejoice knowing he is with Jesus and singing hymns again with his Momma.
Hugh is survived by his children Philip Curbow, Karen Barnes (Ed), Charles Curbow, Jeff Curbow, and Kym Curbow Manglona (Ron), his grandchildren Kyle Curbow, Casey Curbow, Philip Michael Curbow, Matthew Russell, Christopher Russell, Nicholas Barnes, Ashli Curbow Perry, Andy Curbow, April White, Jesse Curbow, Teddy Curbow, Savannah Moss and Kayla Manglona; along with many great-grandchildren and the Linda's Babies children Miss Linda and Papa Hugh helped raise. He is also survived by numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews whom he loved.
To know our sweet Daddy was to love him. He was a kind, generous, loving, and funny social butterfly. He touched the lives of many and will be deeply missed until we join him in Heaven.
Our hearts are broken, but we know we will see him again in Paradise as the Bible tells us this in the Gospel of John 3:16, "For God so loved the world, that He gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have everlasting life."
We love you, Daddy.
