HUGH DUNLAP Obituary

DUNLAP, Hugh Austin Jr. Of Westwood, passed away January 22, 2024 after a brief illness, at the age of 93, with his loving wife of 56 years, Mary, at his side. He was born May 7, 1930 to Hugh Dunlap, Sr. and Margie Dunlap (Forsythe) in Pawtucket, RI. He attended Pawtucket schools, graduating from East High. During the Korean Conflict, he served in the U.S. Army. He graduated from Bryant College in RI and began his career as a financial analyst at the Old Colony Trust Company in Boston. He later moved to the First National Bank of Boston, where he rose to vice president in charge of operations. He served on the committee of the American Bankers Association that developed the CUSIP number used to identify securities. In 1969, Hugh became President of Freedom Capital Management, a subsidiary of Tucker, Anthony and R.L. Day, where he was a partner. He led Freedom for 25 years, developing a team of forward thinking, dedicated associates, with uplifting ideas and very careful management for their clients. Hugh and Mary lived in Brookline for almost 50 years, where they were involved in the town. Hugh served as a Town Meeting Member, vice chairman of the Town's Advisory Committee, a member of the Brookline Library's Finance Committee and a member of the Brookline Retirement Board. For several years, he served as a board member of the St. Elizabeth Community in RI and was a Trustee Emeritus of Bryant University. A lifelong Episcopalian, Hugh and his family were active members of All Saints Parish in Brookline, where he served on the Vestry, as Treasurer, and Sr. Warden. Summers were spent in Narragansett, RI with extended family and many visitors. Hugh loved his Boxer dogs, especially Fritz and Jilly, and much to his family's pleasure, he was a proud Red Sox season ticket holder for 25 years. Hugh was a husband, father, brother, PopPop, dog lover and businessman. He was a kind man with soft words and a big heart. Hugh was predeceased by his sister, Jane W. Snape. He is survived by his wife, Mary; sons, Peter (Anna), Philip (Danielle) and Michael (Meredith); grandson, Alex; granddaughters, Hanna and Madelyn Dunlap, Olivia Elkins, and great-granddaughter, Emma Elkins. A Service will be held Saturday, February 3, 2024 at All Saints Parish, 1773 Beacon St., Brookline, at 1 pm. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Pan-Mass Challenge rider ID: PD0166 (supporting the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute) or All Saints Parish.
