Hugh F. Moran, 90, a resident of Nashua since 1975, passed away peacefully Monday, October 30th, 2023 at the Community Hospice House in Merrimack. A native of Beverly, MA, he was educated locally and was a graduate of Boston College (Army ROTC) class of 1955. He also earned Master's degrees from Boston University and Rivier University.
He leaves his wife of 62 years, Anne, and 5 children: Therese, James and his wife Janet, Elizabeth, Michael and his wife Teresa, and Kathleen. Proud, loving grandfather of Cassandra, Emily, Rebecca, Martin, Brianna and Benjamin. He leaves a brother John and his wife Marjorie of North Carolina; and in-laws Robert and his wife Elaine Santos of New Jersey along with several nieces and nephews.
During his service of 20 years in the United States Army, he received many awards and commendations to include the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry and the Bronze Star. Upon retirement from the United States Army, the family settled in Nashua, New Hampshire, Civic-minded, he assisted in both local and national elections and served on the Nashua Planning Board for several years. After retirement from his position as Personnel Director for the City of Manchester, he enjoyed several years of interaction with Charlotte Avenue second-graders helping them sharpen their math skills.
An avid bowler, he was a member of three leagues: Monday Industrial, Wednesday Afternoon Senior League, and Friday Night TGIF Mixed League. The Nashua Public Library was his second home and he always commended it for its fine book selection. Never one to eat an "at home" breakfast he was a regular at Denny's and other local breakfast eateries where he interacted with staff and patrons. He enjoyed watching all New England sports teams and historical television programs. His favorite saying for much of his life was "It's better to light a candle than curse the darkness".

My first memory of Hugh Moran was on the day after Christmas 1961. My mother had her seventh child on Christmas Eve and she and the baby were still in the hospital. I was 9 years old and the oldest child. All of us Miles kids were very sick and we were all laying on the two couches and the arm chair. Christmas toys and a wooden toboggan were strewn around the room. Our Grandma had been helping take care of us, but she got sick and had to go home to bed. The front door opened and in came cousin, Anne Marie and the tallest man I ever saw! Anne Marie introduced us to her fiancé, Hugh Moran.
Since there was no place for them to sit down, Hugh propped the toboggan from one couch to edge of the chair and he and Anne Marie sat on it to visit with us. They were both so nice and asked us about our new baby brother, David. I will never forget that day. They were the only visitors we had that Christmas.
Love, Nancy Miles James
