Hugh Alvin Ricks was one of those people everyone knew even if they didn't really know him. His designs for everything from early Jazzfest posters to Zatarain's spice labels, from the White Pages cover dedicated to the Aquarium of the Americas to the logos of the Hilton Hotel, were part of the New Orleans artistic landscape for decades.

"If you mention my daddy to anyone," said his son Patrick Ricks, "they can tell you at one time he was Mr. Art Deco of New Orleans."

And his artistry didn't end with his art.

"He was the consummate Renaissance man," said his son-in-law, U.S. Army Lt. Col. William C. Radcliff. "He was accomplished on many different levels, very well read, very erudite, soft-spoken and thoughtful."

Ricks grew up in the Iberville housing project and lied about his age to enter the U.S. Marine Corps early. When his deception was discovered near the end of boot camp, he was forced to wait a few months before he endured the arduous training regime a second time. After his discharge from the service, he studied design at Delgado Community College while working as a security guard at NASA.

He applied his customary sense of dedication to his commercial art career, working tirelessly on a steady stream of high-profile commissions from the 1960s onward: The Crescent City Classic poster, the Albuquerque Balloon Festival poster, the Boston Marathon poster. He won so many design and art awards over the years that he eventually stopped entering such competitions.

"I woke up every single morning to Beethoven, Mozart, The Moody Blues, Pink Floyd or Simon and Garfunkel, playing softly," said son Patrick, "and the sound of an air compressor running an airbrush. I woke up to the smell of turpentine."

Ricks married twice, having six children (Hugh Brion, Cynthia, Lorena, Sean, Benjamin and Patrick) with wife Janice Schmit Ricks and another child (Emma) with wife Laura Rizzo Ricks.

"He would sit with his pipe, wearing a straw hat, with his legs crossed like a gentleman, sketching," said Patrick Ricks. "He touched this town in a quiet way."

Ricks had recently completed an 8-foot portrait commission for Christian Brothers Academy when digestive problems caused him to check into Lindy Boggs Medical Center for gall bladder surgery. That was just days before Katrina struck, plunging New Orleans, including the hospital where Ricks was recovering, into chaos. Days later, after a harrowing, debilitating evacuation, the artist died Sept. 16 in Fort Worth, Texas. He was 66.

"There's no doubt in my mind that if my dad hadn't gone through all he'd been through," said son Patrick, "he'd be alive today."

Ms. Jan and the Ricks family,

I was living in Atlanta in 2005.
When Katrina hit, my family evacuated to my home.
I worked at a hospital in Atlanta in the Cardiac Cath Lab. One day shortly after Katrina, I looked at our patient list and saw a name I recognized. It was Hugh Ricks. I remember spending time at his house with his kids when I was very young. Jan and Hugh were good friends with my Mom and Dad.
I believe he was having a pacemaker inserted or possibly having a procedure to look into an irregular heartbeat. I was very emotional during this time and needed to connect with anyone from NOLA.
I went into the procedure room before they prepped him. He was very ill. He looked frail but still a site for sore eyes. I told him that I was Dale and Barbara's daughter. I asked him how he ended up in Atlanta and he told me about his evacuation. I let him know that Dad and my family were safe. I hugged him and cried with him.
I went to visit him the next day but he'd been evacuated again. I don't know how I found out that he passed away but I was saddened by the news.
Fate had our paths cross. I'm glad I got to see him and hug him one last time.

I own one of his Jazz Fest Posters and think of him every time I look at it.

Love to all...

Laura and Emma, can't remember when I learned of Hugh's death, but know that I tried to contact you at that time to no avail. I have thought of you and all Hugh's children, and remembered Ben, many times since. In conversation with my daughter (who knew Hugh) today, his name came up and I felt the need to check the Internet to see if there was anything about him. Am so glad I did --- if only because you will know that all of you have been in our thoughts all along. Laura, as you know, Hugh was a friend and we were both tenants in the Beauvoir. Saw him and spoke with him several times after you moved to Canal Blvd. We were and are so sorry for your loss. Hugh and his family will be in our thoughts as long as we live.

I know after reading this article that my dear friend Hugh has been gone since 2005 but to me he just passed away 5 minutes ago. All this time I have been picturing him alive and well and being a big part of the recovery in Lake View. He loved his house there and made a lot of the modifications to the house himself. Even though there was a big age difference between us I never felt it - he had such a young spirit and such an open curious mind. We worked on many creative projects and the work was always wonderful and always felt more like play than work. I am truly sorry for his loss to the community and his large family. I hope his previous wife and young daughter are doing well and that his memory is not over shadowed by the tragic ending of such a extremely kind and talented gentle man. Thinking of you Hugh! Love, Lynne

Hugh may be gone but he is not forgotten. Just today I was remembering what a kind man he was and the good times we shared with him, his family, and the other family members, past and present. I hope the entire Ricks family are well and still enjoying those wonderful crawfish boils. God Bless.

I was Cindy & Lorena's teacher in high school. I didn't know Hugh, personally, but I have the Water Godess & Pelican posters from the Worlds Fair and I loved his work. I was sorry to learn of his death these years later. I also lost my sister-in-law to medical complications of Hurricane Katrina. My heart goes out to the family. I know this was hard for all of you.

Dear Patrick, Jan and all, My heart was sickened when I ran into Patrick near his barber shop in downtown N.O. in 2006 and learned of Hugh's death pursuant to the storm. I will always prize my little postcard size World's Fair poster that he autographed for me. Oh those days we all had together back at CCBC. His art is adorning our eventual home now. I miss and love you Jan and kids. God bless you, Lynn Bigham

Hugh was my brother-in-law in 1973. I was married to his brother Dewey. It broke my heart that such an incredible person with such a love for life and all that life can give to you was lost because of Hurricane Katrina. My heart goes out to his children, Jan and Laura. He was such a unique person and anyone that met him knew it immediately. Hugh was the reason I pursued a career in art and even though I am a Music Therapist now, it is his love of the arts and music that added to my quest to enrich myself. He will always be in my heart.

I am so sorry to read about Hugh. I worked with him at Pertuit & Associates in 1976-1977 and just loved him. A true gentleman with a fine sense of humor. When we worked together, I was being courted by my future husband. After a few weeks, Hugh commented that "If I were your daddy, I'd have to ask that young man what his intentions were." He also told me that "Back where I come from, we shoot people who are sarcastic to us." I took the point to heart. I was fresh from NYC and had all of the bad habits.

I especially enjoyed going to lunch with Hugh. I still wonder how he could eat such spicy food when it was so hot outside! He'd laugh, mop his brow, and groan with pleasure.

I moved to Ketchikan, Alaska in 1977, returned to N.O. twice, and will visit again tomorrow. Hugh is without a doubt one of my finest memories of the place.

With profound sadness.

As a client of Escudier, Richard & Mattingly design firm, the Palace Casino Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi was fortunate to have Hugh work on a number of our designs. I have a copy of one of his designs framed and hanging in my son's bedroom. I look at it frequently and think of Hugh. I am honored to have known Hugh. He was an extremely talented gentleman who has been and will continue to be missed.

Larry and I and the rest of the group here at Escudier, Richard & Mattingly think about him all the time. In fact, his desk is still set up just the way he left it. We keep saying we need to do something about it, but just can't do it yet. I guess it makes us feel like he really isn't gone.

Hope your families are doing fine.
