Ida Nell Woodard was born in Owensboro, Kentucky on May 22, 1935, to Levi Woodard, Sr., and Roberta Lorraine Barker Woodard. She was the eldest of 12 children. She attended Western Elementary (Owensboro, KY), Southside Elementary, and Roosevelt Elementary (Elkhart, IN), Adelphian SDA Academy (Holly, MI), and she graduated from Elkhart High School. Ida's grandfather, Samuel Lorenzo Barker, affectionally known as "Boppa," was the principal of Western Elementary school when she attended.
Ida met and fell in love with Maurice R. Valentine and in 1954, they were married in San Antonia, TX where Maurice was stationed. The Army moved them to Fort Leonard Wood, MO. After his military service, Maurice moved his wife, Ida, and their three daughters to his hometown
Kansas City, MO. They later had two sons. Ida worked at St Anthony's Group Home for Childrenfollowed by working as a teacher's assistant at the public school her children were attending, Wendell Phillips Elementary. Later, Ida was a claim's representative at Traveler's Insurance Company where she worked until she retired. After the untimely passing of Maurice at the age of 53, Ida eventually met and married Charles Washington, Jr.Charles joined, was baptized, and became an active member of Linwood Boulevard SDA Temple alongside Ida. Charles served as a deacon until health challenges prevented his active service, at which time he became an honorary deacon.
Ida was very engaged in church auxiliary and social activities. She was a faithful member and officer of the United Christian Women, Group B service organization. This group provided support to the church, sponsored community charity events, held fundraising events (including their annual pancake breakfast) that provided for educational scholarships. She was also a member of the Lunch Bunch, which met monthly, a book club, and a group learning to knit and crochet. She really looked forward to these group meetings.
