Thomas Peter Sullivan II, 81, magazine publisher, active in volunteer service building homes in Newark, Guatemala
Thomas Peter Sullivan, II passed away on May 27 at age 81 at the family home in Chatham Borough, NJ.
He leaves behind wife of 58 years Suzanne, children Tom, Molly, and Patrick; their spouses, Trisha, Chris, and Kaitlin, respectively; as well as seven grandchildren: Everett, Shannon, Duncan, Tommy, Dylan, Kieran, and Louise.
Sullivan was born on November 21, 1943, in Ottumwa, Iowa and he grew up, along with his brother Timothy, primarily in Sioux City, Iowa.
Sullivan graduated with a degree in journalism from the University of South Dakota before deploying to Vietnam, where he was a photojournalist for the military publication Stars and Stripes.
When he returned from the war, Sullivan began a long career in magazine publishing - which included a brief on-air stint for a local Sioux City TV news station. He served in executive leadership positions at companies that published a range of titles somewhat comedic in their breadth, from American Salon to motorcycle publications, with a career-defining specialization on the plastics industry. In fact, he co-founded Abby Communications, publisher of Injection Molding Magazine.
After selling Abby Communications, Sullivan turned his focus to volunteering. He was a board member at several organizations, but the true spirit of his giving was in travelling to do the physical work, from Habitat for Humanity in Newark to his trips to build homes in Guatemala
An avid golfer and long-time member of Madison Golf Club, Sullivan also enjoyed vacations in coastal South Carolina, trips abroad and, most of all, investing time with his family.
He lived a full life on his own terms. Sullivan was privileged to have been actively involved in the lives of his children, their spouses, and all his grandchildren while he was still in good physical and mental health.
