Ilene Barbara Raphael

Ilene Barbara Raphael, 80, passed away on November 15, 2025 at Elfindale Manor. She is survived by her spouse, Donald; her sons, Steven (and wife Shawna) and Jason (and wife Shelllie); her grandchildren, Lucy, Julian, Scarlett and Millie; and her sister Carolyn (and husband Ray).

Born in Brooklyn, NY in 1945, she was the daughter of Julius and Leah Grote. Ilene majored in art and received a masters degree in education. She went on to teach art and special education. She married Donald in the summer of 1971. After putting him through dental school, she then decided to stay at home and dedicate her life to their young family. They moved to Springfield, MO in 1980.

Ilene was a warm, empathetic, loving, cheerful woman. She always had a big smile to brighten everyone's day. She loved children, Jewish culture, art, her family, chocolate, Broadway shows, and Seinfeld. She made beautiful oil paintings that adorn the homes of many friends and family. She made friends wherever she went and took care of everyone. She volunteered at elementary schools. She started a children's library program at Temple Israel and was the children's librarian for decades, where she taught kids about modern Jewish culture, including Jews in music, art, and literature. She was known for her art projects and watermelon boats. She delivered meals on wheels, befriending many of her clients. Ilene was beloved by everyone who met her and will be missed.

There will be a small graveside service at the Temple Israel cemetery and a Shiva at Temple Israel on Tuesday, November 18 at 6:30pm. In lieu of flowers, Ilene would have liked donations to be made to the Temple Israel Rabbi's Discretionary Fund.
