Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bailey Funeral Home - Mendham on Oct. 10, 2025.
Sister of Christian Charity Immacolata Scarogni passed away on the Feast of the Most Holy Rosary, October 7, 2025, at St. John the Baptist Convent in Landeck, Ohio. Immacolata was born in the Bronx, New York, on March 23, 1968. She was the second youngest of the six children of Ercole and Assunta (Iodice) Scarogni, both from Italy, and the first of her siblings to be born in the United States.
Immacolata graduated from Immaculate Conception School and St. Pius V High School, both in the Bronx. She attended Bronx Community College for one year before entering the Sisters of Christian Charity in
Mendham, NJ, in 1987. She was invested as a Sister in 1988, receiving the name Sister Immacolata, professed First Vows on August 16, 1990, and Final Vows on August 15, 1996.
Sister Immacolata earned an Associate in Arts from Assumption College for Sisters,
Mendham, NJ; Bachelor of Arts In Elementary Education and Psychology from the College of Saint Elizabeth, Convent Station, NJ; and Master of Arts in Pastoral Ministry with a Concentration in Youth Ministry from Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ.
Sister Immacolata's energetic, selfless service during her 37 years as a Sister of Christian Charity included teaching grades 1 through 8 at St. Nicholas, Jersey City, NJ; St. Mary's, Wharton, NJ; Immaculate Conception, Bronx, NY; St. Mary, Scranton, PA; and St. Nicholas/St. Mary, Wilkes-Barre, PA.
In Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, Sister simultaneously enjoyed working as a teacher and in Youth Ministry. Her joy, kindness, generosity, sense of humor and capacity to form the young in their faith were a witness to others of God's boundless love for them.
Sister Immacolata also answered the call to leadership in many other ways – as local coordinator in her convent, as a member of the Pastoral Council in Scranton and Wilkes-Barre, as a member of the Vocation Committee in the Diocese of Scranton, and as Coordinator of Youth Activities for the South Wilkes-Barre area.
In 2015, Sister responded to the call to begin a ministry in Ohio as Parish Manager and Religious Education Coordinator for St. John the Baptist Parish, Landeck. In 2020, a second parish, St. Patrick, Spencerville, was added to her numerous responsibilities. Her presence and willingness to serve often benefitted a third parish, St. John the Evangelist, Delphos. Sister's zeal, leadership and capacity to "get things done" resulted in a total restoration of both the Landeck and Spencerville churches during her tenure. She gave herself in countless seen and unseen ways to all whom she met.
In 2020, Bishop Daniel Thomas of the Diocese of Toledo appointed Sister Immacolata to the Diocesan Seminarian Admissions/Formation Board.
In 2022, St. John the Baptist Church in Landeck dedicated a baseball field in her honor, "to show appreciation for everything Sister Immacolata has done... in being a force that has energized the community," according to then-pastor, Rev. Dennis Walsh (now Bishop of the Diocese of Davenport, Iowa).
Sister Immacolata is survived by the Sisters of Christian Charity, her brothers Luigi (Deborah) Scarogni and Massimo (Anna) Scarogni, her sisters Doriana (Frank) Passafiume and Susie (Walter) Walsh, her sister-in-law, Gigi, her nieces and nephews, and many people who were blessed to call her "friend."
She was predeceased by her parents and her brother, Anthony Scarogni.
