Imogene “Gene” Hazel (Scott) Hemken was born on August 8, 1927, in Binger, Caddo County, OK, the youngest of five children born into the family of John Elmsley Scott band Nellie Frances (Martin) Scott. Her father was a farmer and carpenter, and her mother was a homemaker. Gene passed away in Ralston, Pawnee County, OK on October 17, 2025, at age 98.
She married Cecil Ralph Hemken on January 3, 1947, in Kansas and were together for 35 years until his death on December 12, 1982, at age 59. He was a WWII Veteran and worked for Brown & Root Construction. Three daughters were born to them: Sandra “Sandy” Kay Hemken Goad (D), Kimetha “Kim” Rae-Nell Hemken Areman and Regina “Gina” Faye Hemken Davis and grandson Brian Ray Goad and great grandson Bronson Babe Goad.
Gene has lived in Oklahoma her entire life. Her dad was born in Indian Territory and her mother in Lamar, Texas. Before Gene was born, they moved to rural Caddo County near Binger. She attended small country schools in the Binger area including Balk Knob and Centerville through the 8th grade.
She worked at The City Cafe, Roy Hurt Hardware and OG&E until her retirement. She loved to dance to good ole country swing, sewing, cooking, mowing and tending to her yard and flowers and spending time with her family were her hobbies. She was a wonderful cook and made the best coconut meringue pie ever. She traveled to California to visit family and took a cruise or two. Christmas is her favorite holiday because she enjoyed the good food and family being together. Gene attended the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses. Going to community socials, listening to her dad play in the band and trips to visit family are her favorite childhood memories.
Gene was preceded in death by her parents, husband Cecil, daughter Sandy and four siblings, Glenn, Herbert, Audrey and Ethel. She is survived by daughters Regina (Wally) Davis and Kim Areman, grandson Brian Goad and great grandson Bronson Goad, numerous nieces and nephews and a host of extended family and friends.
