Imogene Platt

Imogene McMillan Platt, a beloved family matriarch, passed away peacefully on August 12, 2024, at Caring Acres Nursing and Rehab Center, in Anita, Iowa. Born on January 5, 1938, in Marion County, South Carolina, her journey through life was marked by her vibrant spirit, love for her family and friends, and an unwavering sense of determination.
She spent her early years in Mullins, South Carolina where she attended Palmetto Elementary and High School. Her passion for elegance and grace led her to the Ophelia DeVore School of Charm, where she refined her poise and became a model for stylish Pillbox Hats. Her thirst for knowledge continued at Queensborough Community College, where she pursued studies in Liberal Arts, forever valuing the power of education.
Her professional life was as fruitful as it was long. She dedicated several years working at Rockland State Hospital before joining Verizon (formerly known as New York Telephone Company) as a telephone operator. After 30 years of diligent service, she retired, leaving behind a legacy of hard work and dedication.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, she was a woman of diverse interests and talents. She was an avid reader, with a particular fondness for autobiographies, which allowed her to explore the lives of others and draw inspiration from their stories. Her intellectual curiosity was matched by her love for Scrabble, a game that brought her joy and showcased her quick wit. Her adventurous spirit was shone through her travels, as she traversed the globe from Hong Kong to Brazil, and Spain to Switzerland, absorbing cultures and creating memories which also included her travels to France, Italy, England the Caribbean Islands, and various parts of the U.S.
Her life was a testament to the goodness of the Lord. She approached every day as a new opportunity for adventure and cherished moments entertaining her family and friends during the holidays, preparing her famous chili and collard greens.
Imogene's legacy is lovingly carried on by her sisters, Sarah Bell Ford, who resides in Brooklyn, New York and Rev. Virginia McCrae, who resides in Washington, D.C.; her daughters, Patricia (Dr. Gary) Barker, in Winterset, Iowa, Desiree Miller, in Burlington, New Jersey, and Donna (Granville "Jay") Jones in Austin, Texas; her grandson-son, Michael (Traci) Smith, in Elgin, South Carolina; her 20 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. Her passing was preceded by her parents, Meakie and Murlean Swinton Platt; her sister, Louise Campbell; her brothers Seymore and BC Platt; and her spouse, Joseph McMillan.
Her life was a beautiful patchwork of moments, each thread woven with love, resilience, and the joy of living. She will be remembered for her infectious laughter, her generous heart, and the wisdom she imparted to all who were fortunate enough to know her. As we bid farewell to Imogene Platt (or those who may have known her as "Emma", "Jean", "Mrs. Em"), we celebrate the remarkable woman she was and the indelible mark she has left on our hearts.
Imogene's family will hold a celebration of her life, honoring the incredible woman she was and the countless lives she touched. She will be laid to rest surrounded by the love and memories she so graciously shared with us all. Her light will continue to shine brightly through her family legacy and the many lives she influenced, guiding us like a beacon of love and strength.
