Ines Chao Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Cooney Funeral Home - Park Ridge on Mar. 6, 2024.
Chao, Ines Rosa (née Vera y Montes de Oca; Oct. 5, 1932 - Feb. 27, 2024). Ines Rosa Chao of Chicago, IL died of a broken heart, yet peacefully in her sleep at her Florida home, just 59 days after the loss of her beloved husband of 67 years, José Rafael Chao, Sr.
Originally from Manzanillo, Cuba, Ines and José fled to the U.S. in 1967 with their three young sons, José B. (Christine), José A., and José R., Jr. (Susana), and settled in Chicago. Ines had been a teacher in Cuba but soon after arriving in America -- out of necessity -- she aced the state beautician exam in her new second language. The family then purchased a beauty shop which she successfully ran. Collectively, the Chao parents worked and saved, allowing them to purchase their first private home in the United States.
After this accomplishment, Ines re-certified to teach, subsequently working for Chicago Public Schools for 16 years. AIways an avid reader deeply interested in politics, Ines also enrolled for a master's degree in political science, which she was only one credit hour short of achieving.
In addition to her three sons, Ines leaves behind grandchildren Michael, Taylor (Saxon), Lauren (Chad), Ashley (Josh), Antonio, Anaïs (Kyle), Kristen, and Amy, as well as great-grandchildren Victoria, Hudson, Jordan, Brielle, Reagan, and Evelyn.
Ines is remembered by one and all for her elegance, determination, intelligence, propriety, vivacity, and kindness, as well as her dedication to and love for her immediate and extended family. The visitation will be held on Friday, March 8th from 12:30-1:30 pm at Cooney Funeral Home (625 Busse Highway, Park Ridge), followed by a brief service and burial at Maryhill Catholic Cemetery (8600 N. Milwaukee Ave., Niles).
