Iphiginia (Effie) S. Nicas, 73, of Long Branch, passed away at Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, NJ on Wednesday, January 21st, 2026.

Effie was born on May 16, 1952 and was a lifelong resident of Long Branch. She attended Long Branch Public Schools. Effie attained a number of academic achievements including First Place in the Rutgers Science Fair for Chromatic Pigment Patterns for the Genus Acer Leaf Species. She had the honor of representing the Girl Scouts at the Apollo 12 space launch in November of 1969, as well as participation in other well-known scientific symposiums. She graduated from Long Branch High School in 1970. Effie went on to graduate from Beaver College (now Arcadia University), Glenside, PA. in 1975 with a double major in Chemistry and Fine Arts. She attended University of Pennsylvania graduate school and Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. Her artistic talents were expressed in the illustration of a Greek cook book, many local arts exhibitions, and by playing the flute in the Doctor's Symphony, Philadelphia, PA.

Effie held a strong belief that "art matters".

Effie's career in the sciences included work at the Wistar Institute for Biological Research, University of Pennsylvania, Veteran's Hospital in Philadelphia, and Long Branch Public Schools. She served as Vice President of the Long Branch Public Library for 17 years, was Treasurer and member of the Long Branch Historical Association, a member of The Hellenic University Club, a parishioner of St. George Greek Orthodox Church in Ocean Township and member of the Saint George's Philoptochos Society.

Effie was predeceased by her parents, Dr. Allen M. Nicas and Alice A. Nicas. She is survived by her brother, Michael Peter Nicas, and several close friends.

Visitation will be from 10 am until her funeral service at 11 am on Tuesday, February 3, 2026 at St. George Greek Orthodox Church, 1033 West Park Avenue, Ocean Township, NJ. For condolences, please visit www.fiorefuneralhomes.com.

Effie, I'm so sorry I didnt know, what I did know was that you were a sweet, genuine caring soul and I was privileged to be your friend. Give my love to your Mom and give my Ty a kiss for me. We'll all be together one day to celebrate our lives together.

Effie was a wonderful, caring friend throughout our Girl Scout years. She was a giver and will be missed by all those who knew her. Her engagement in her community was lifelong. Prayers for her brother and other surviving family and friends.

So sorry to hear this. Effie and I were friends in high school and reconnected in Philadelphia where I am now. I knew her whole family.
She was very sweet and every year she sent me an original art card for the holidays.
I was just wondering how she was doing in LB
Rest in Peace

When I went back to teaching at Long Branch schools, Effie was assigned to my class- the kids loved doing art with her - I enjoyed talking to her- she was a wealth of inspiration. She graduated the year before me in school- lovely person and so talented.
