Irene Kolbaska Obituary

Published by Legacy on Oct. 2, 2025.
Irene Kolbaska, a shining example of faith and love, passed away peacefully on September 29, 2025, at the age of 96, in Barrington, IL. Born on October 17, 1928, in Chicago, IL, to Blase and Kunegunda, she spent her childhood and formative years in the city that she always held close to her heart. Irene's life was marked by her unwavering dedication to family, faith, and community, leaving behind a legacy that will be cherished by all who knew her.

A graduate of St. Helen's Grade School and Tuley High School, Irene's early education laid the foundation for her lifelong commitment to the Catholic Church. She was an active and devoted member of St. Helen's Church in Chicago, and later, St. Isaac Church in Niles. Irene's faith was her guiding light, and she expressed it through her incredible talent for crafting rosaries. She lovingly made over 500 rosaries for the armed forces, a testament to her generous spirit and patriotism. Her creations were not only a symbol of her devotion but also a gift of comfort and faith to those serving their country.

Irene's impact on her community extended beyond her church involvement. She was a friend to all and a pillar of strength and kindness, exemplified by her relationships with her family and friends. She was a cherished sister to Joseph, Johnny, Bruno, Chester, Casey, Leonard, and Stanley, as well as a loving sister to Ann, Cecelie, Helen, and Maeszaniec. Her legacy continues through her sons, Jeffrey, David (Karen), and Larry, who will carry forward the values she instilled in them.

The matriarch of a large and loving family, Irene was blessed with the joy of grandchildren, Brittnay and Lindsay, and great-grandchildren, Jaxon, Remi, and Ryan. Each of them was touched by her warmth, wisdom, and the life lessons she imparted: always be kind, attend church, and trust that the Lord will answer all prayers. These principles were the cornerstones of her life and the memories she created with her family, especially during holiday gatherings and vacations to the Wisconsin Dells.

Irene was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Stephen, and her parents. She leaves behind a host of relatives, including cousins Linda, Kenny, and Pauly, and dear friends, Sandy and Jamie, who all experienced her kindness and selflessness firsthand.

Described by those who knew her as kind, passionate, and loving, Irene had a special talent for making every moment count. Her passion for sewing was only eclipsed by her love for making rosaries and her dedication to the church. The hymns "On Eagle's Wings," "Be Not Afraid," and "Here I Am, Lord," were among her favorites, echoing her own journey of faith and service.

Irene's life was a beautiful tapestry of generosity, creativity, and selflessness. She showed us all how to lead a life of purpose and grace. As we bid farewell to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the memories, the love, and the light she brought into this world. Her spirit will continue to guide and inspire us, just as the rosaries she crafted will continue to be held in hands that pray for peace and comfort. Irene Kolbaska's legacy will live on in the hearts of those she touched, a legacy of love, faith, and kindness.

Her services will be held on Wednesday, October 8 with visitation from 10:00 am – 11:00 am, and Mass to follow at 11:00 am at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 3500 Washington St, McHenry, IL. Burial will take place at 2:00 pm at St Adalbert Catholic Cemetery & Mausoleums, 6800 N Milwaukee Ave, Niles, IL. Irene's family and friends take comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on in the lessons she taught, the traditions she created, and the love she shared so generously.
