Irene Meyer Obituary

She was born to Ole Arthur and Leona Lydia (Buetow) Nelson on their farm west of Rutland, ND on October 12, 1940. She was baptized at Trinity Lutheran Church on May 18, 1941. At age six, Irene's father died, and her mother was being treated for TB so the family was cared for by relatives until her mother returned home to live on their farm. When she was 16 Irene went to live and work for the Walund family near Forman where she met Leonard who was also working on that farm. Irene and Leonard were married January 17, 1959 at Forman, ND. They made their home near Gwinner, ND until 1972, when they moved to Oakes. Irene worked at Oakes Public School as a cook. Leonard passed away September 21, 2006. Irene was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church and LWML.
She is survived by her children, Scott (Teresa) Meyer, Lidgerwood, ND, David (Linda) Meyer, West Fargo, ND, Cindy Hyatt, Oakes, ND, Tim (Elise) Meyer, Lisbon, ND, Diane (Jack) Ortmeier, Mitchell, SD, and Bradley (Jodi) Meyer, Johnston, IA; one sister, Inez Olson; 15 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Irene was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Leonard, and her siblings, Albin, William "Bill", Marvin, and Loretta.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, October 18, 2025 from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. followed by the funeral at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oakes. Burial will be at Oakes View Cemetery. Irene's service will be live streamed on our website on her obituary page.
